Spoilers throughout. The killers are Simon and Marina Haysmith, a traveling American couple whose postcards foreshadow murders staged to echo artworks. In the final confrontation, Jacob Kanon shoots Simon and saves journalist Dessie Lombard, then lets the killers go. Marina’s closing call to her father confirms she is alive; Simon’s fate remains uncertain.
Who are the killers in The Postcard Killings?
Simon and Marina Haysmith are the killers. The suspicious American couple’s travels through Europe put them in the orbit of Jacob Kanon’s investigation. Their postcards to journalists tease later murders and point toward the art that will inspire each crime scene’s staging.
The film presents the killings as deliberate performances: victims and settings are arranged to echo art and convey ideas such as love, pain, or death. The references help establish the pattern and give investigators clues, but they do not make the violence meaningful or excusable.
Why are Simon and Marina killing newlyweds?
The motive given in the film’s ending explanation is their response to a society that rejects their relationship. They target newlywed couples as a warped expression of that grievance.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The film also reveals that Simon and Marina are adopted, not biological siblings. That changes the implication of the earlier incest framing, but it does not lessen the abuse or the murders.
What happens in the final confrontation?
Journalist Dessie Lombard publishes an open letter to draw the killers out. When Simon and Marina respond with the phrase “the curtain is pulled back,” Jacob interprets it as a clue pointing to Russia. After the pair’s last murder in Helsinki, Jacob and the authorities pursue them.

Simon’s fate is left open. Marina drags him away after he is shot, but the film does not establish whether he survives. It also does not show Marina being arrested. The closing scene leaves the threat unresolved rather than providing a definitive outcome.
What does the ending mean?
One way to read the art references is as self-mythologizing: the killers treat staged violence as a message and use postcards to shape how investigators encounter each crime. The clues help Jacob follow their pattern, while the final call shows that his intervention has not conclusively ended the danger. This is an interpretation of the plot, not a verified statement of the filmmakers’ intent.
