The Polar Express 2 has not been officially confirmed in the sources available as of September 30, 2026. Producer Gary Goetzman said in January 2024 that a sequel was “trying to be worked out,” but that comment does not establish a studio greenlight, a production start, a cast, or a release date.
Is The Polar Express 2 confirmed?
No official Warner Bros. announcement, release date, cast, or production start is established by the sources checked through September 30, 2026. The best evidence of sequel discussions is a January 2024 interview with Gary Goetzman, a producer of the original film. ComicBook reported him saying: “But that is trying to be worked out now, for sure, Polar 2. Yes.” (ComicBook’s January 2024 interview.)

That is an attributed comment about an effort to work out a sequel at that time—not confirmation that Warner Bros. approved the film, that work is continuing, or that it has entered production.
Is there a release date?
No release date is established. In June 2024, The Direct reported that there was no expected date and that the development stage was unclear then. That report describes the situation at the time; it does not establish the project’s status in 2026.

Warner Bros. Discovery’s second-quarter shareholder letter, dated August 6, 2026, describes selected releases for the second half of 2026 and discusses the studio’s 2027 slate, but does not name The Polar Express 2 (Warner Bros. Discovery’s second-quarter 2026 results). The omission means the film is not among the titles named in that letter; it does not prove that no unannounced development work exists.
Is the Polar Express 2 trailer real?
The sequel-related concept videos identified in the sources are fan-made, not official studio trailers. One YouTube description explicitly says its video is fan-made and not affiliated with Warner Bros. An IMDb user-generated sequel listing likewise does not amount to a studio announcement. Treat a video or listing as confirmation only if Warner Bros. or another clearly identified official source announces it.
Will Tom Hanks return?
No sequel cast has been verified in the sources checked, so there is no confirmed answer about Tom Hanks or any other returning performer. The same applies to a sequel’s director, plot, and production start; claims about them should not be treated as established without an official announcement or attributable confirmation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is the original film based on?
The 2004 film is based on Chris Van Allsburg’s picture book, The Polar Express. The original book is relevant source material for the film, but it is not a sequel novel; no sequel book is established here. Official franchise material identifies the book as the film’s source (official Polar Express franchise site).
