The Naval History and Heritage Command says repeated searches of its archives found no documents confirming the alleged experiment or Navy interest in carrying it out. The Office of Naval Research says the story’s proposed force-field invisibility does not conform to known physical laws.
What the Philadelphia Experiment story claims
The legend says that in 1943 the U.S. Navy conducted an experiment involving USS Eldridge, a destroyer escort. Versions of the story claim the ship was made invisible to radar or to the eye; some add that it vanished from Philadelphia and reappeared elsewhere. More sensational retellings describe crew members being injured or fused into the vessel.
These are claims made in later accounts, not established facts about the ship. The details vary between versions, and the official Navy history does not provide a verified test date, location, or witness account.
What the Navy’s records search found
The Naval History and Heritage Command reports that records in its Archives Branch have been repeatedly searched. It says no documents were located confirming the event or any Navy interest in attempting such an achievement. That finding is specific to the command’s searches; it should not be expanded into a claim that every government collection or conceivable record has been examined.

The absence of confirming documents is not, by itself, a description of every record that exists. But the alleged disappearance and teleportation lack the documentary support expected for a real Navy operation, and the official historical account does not substantiate them. Read the Naval History and Heritage Command’s account of the Philadelphia Experiment.
Why the legend is associated with the 1950s
The Navy’s historical account traces the story’s modern paper trail to 1955, rather than to a verified wartime Navy report. It connects the legend’s development to Morris K. Jessup’s book The Case for UFOs and an annotated copy that came to the attention of the Office of Naval Research. The account also identifies Charles Berlitz and William L. Moore’s later book as part of the story’s popularization.

- A fun and challenging puzzle to replicate the USS Constitution.
- Very easy to assemble, no scissors, glue or tape required.
- Number of pieces: 193
- Difficulty 5 of 7. Construction time: 150 to 180 minutes.
- Finished model width 51 cm.
This chronology documents the circulation of the claims, not the occurrence of the experiment. A later book or retelling is evidence that the legend was being discussed, not proof that the events it describes happened.
What the physics claim does—and does not—establish
The Office of Naval Research information sheet addresses the story’s force-field explanation, stating that “the use of force fields to make a ship and her crew invisible does not conform to known physical laws.” This is ONR’s assessment of the claim as described; it is not a named scientist’s statement or a separate reconstruction of a specific wartime test.

General facts about electromagnetic equipment or wartime naval research do not verify this particular story. The ONR assessment speaks to the proposed invisibility mechanism, while the historical-record question is addressed separately by the Naval History and Heritage Command. The evidence-based conclusion is that the Philadelphia Experiment is a postwar legend, not a documented 1943 Navy achievement. The Navy historical command found no confirming documents in its Archives Branch searches, and ONR rejects the story’s described force-field invisibility as inconsistent with known physical laws. The familiar details about teleportation, disappearance, and crew injuries remain unsupported retellings rather than verified history.
