Netflix lists the 2024 show as a six-episode drama, a limited series and an adaptation of a book. Its short run gives the mystery a brisk shape rather than the extended sprawl of a multi-season family saga. Is The Perfect Couple worth watching?
Yes, if you want a glossy ensemble mystery that embraces soap-opera excess instead of insisting on grim realism. The appeal is the collision of a wedding’s picture-perfect surface with family rivalries and suspicion, plus a cast that can make even a pointed glance feel like evidence. The series is at its most enjoyable when it treats its heightened tone as part of the entertainment.

TV Guide’s Maggie Fremont praised the opening dance sequence as a clear signal of the show’s cheeky sensibility, as well as its cast, pace and red herrings. She also found some themes and characters underdeveloped and the epilogue out of step with what came before; her review gave the series 7.5. TIME’s September 5, 2024 review likewise described it as knowingly superficial but entertaining within its soap-opera and thriller conventions. Those are individual critical judgments, not a universal verdict.
How does Nicole Kidman fit the role?
Kidman plays Greer Garrison Winbury, the groom’s mother and a famous novelist. Greer’s status and coolly controlled presence make her an immediate focal point amid a family gathering where everyone has something to hide. Kidman is the high-profile draw, but the show’s appeal depends on the ensemble rather than a single performance.

TIME observed that Greer resembles a wealthy, icy matriarch type Kidman has played in other recent projects. That comparison is TIME’s reading of the role; it need not prevent viewers from enjoying the performance as part of this deliberately heightened family drama.

What are the show’s strengths and limits?
Why the mystery works as entertainment
- A compact pace: Six episodes keep the wedding-weekend story moving.
- An effective setting: A wealthy family’s estate gives the gathering a polished surface and plenty of room for private tensions.
- Playful suspicion: Red herrings and the broad suspect pool suit the show’s knowingly soapy approach.
- An ensemble with star appeal: Kidman anchors the family drama, while the cast supplies the shifting alliances and competing personalities the mystery needs.
Where it may disappoint
- Limited depth: Fremont found that some themes and characters do not get enough development, a trade-off for the quick pace and crowded ensemble.
- A divisive finish: Fremont specifically objected to the epilogue, which she felt did not fit the series.
- Familiar character territory: TIME’s comparison of Greer to other icy matriarch roles Kidman has played may resonate for viewers familiar with those performances.
The result is better approached as a fast, polished beach-read mystery than as a deeply textured character study. Viewers seeking substantial development or a consistently surprising whodunit may find the melodrama’s pleasures less satisfying.
