Spoilers for episode four and the finale of The Penguin. The series’ clearest direct link to The Batman comes in episode four, “Cent’Anni”: it revisits Carmine Falcone’s murders and brings back William Kenzie, the corrupt Gotham police officer from the film. That episode-specific connection sits inside a larger story about Oz Cobb exploiting the power vacuum left by Falcone’s death.
What is the connection between The Penguin and The Batman?
In “Cent’Anni,” Sofia Falcone confronts the history behind her father Carmine’s killings. Women who worked at 44 Below were among his victims, and Sofia questions how he disguised strangulations as suicides. William Kenzie, the corrupt officer connected to Falcone in The Batman, also appears in Falcone’s orbit in the episode. The two details make this more than a general shared setting: the series returns to a specific crime history established by the film. SlashFilm’s October 14, 2024 recap identified the Falcone history and Kenzie’s appearance as the episode’s strongest movie ties.

The connection is especially clear if you recall the film’s plot: Selina Kyle’s family history and her roommate Annika’s death are also tied to Falcone and Kenzie. “Biggest” is best understood as an editorial judgment, not a measurable ranking; the episode stands out because it brings the series back to the film’s Falcone investigation and a character from that story.
Does The Penguin bring back a character from The Batman?
Yes. William Kenzie returns in “Cent’Anni.” He is the corrupt Gotham officer from the film, not a newly introduced character with a similar name. His presence links Sofia’s account of the Falcone family’s crimes to the network of corruption seen in The Batman.

How does the series fit into the wider story?
The Penguin takes place after the Riddler’s flood and Carmine Falcone’s death. With Gotham’s criminal hierarchy unsettled, Oz Cobb pursues power. Warner Bros. Discovery described the eight-episode drama as continuing Matt Reeves’ The Batman crime saga and identifies Colin Farrell as Oz Cobb/The Penguin. The studio’s October 17, 2024 pressroom announcement frames the series as part of that continuing story.
Matt Reeves has described the project as a change in point of view: rather than follow Batman, the series examines Oz’s climb through Gotham’s criminal world. Reeves said he wanted viewers to see Oz “grabbing for power and the chaos that he creates,” and described the transition between projects as “the movie hands off to the show.” In a separate 2024 interview, he said the series continues Oz’s story and moves him toward a place where he can join the next film’s story. These comments explain the intended handoff; they are not confirmation of every later sequel detail or schedule. TheWrap’s October 25, 2024 interview with Reeves and Forbes’ September 16, 2024 interview discuss that creative plan.

Is Batman in The Penguin?
No. Batman does not appear in the series. Showrunner Lauren LeFranc said, “Gotham’s a big city, and the Batman cannot be everywhere at once.” The decision keeps the focus on Oz, Sofia, and the people navigating Gotham’s criminal power struggle rather than making Batman the center of every story in the city. TheWrap’s November 10, 2024 interview with LeFranc covers that choice.

The finale adds a separate family connection: Sofia receives a letter from her half-sister, Selina Kyle. It is another tie to The Batman, but distinct from the episode-four Falcone-and-Kenzie thread. The letter connects the characters without changing the series’ central focus on Oz’s transformation.
