The answer is mixed: the episode’s sharpest scenes come from uneasy character pairings and grounded civic neglect, while Oz’s grand finale is thrilling as villain theater but less convincing as honest persuasion.

Oz’s Bliss operation is growing, and he tries to convert that momentum into a coalition of smaller gang leaders. At the same time, Victor becomes more firmly established as Oz’s protégé, only for a figure tied to his past to threaten the new role. The city’s power rationing favors wealthier neighborhoods; Oz exploits the crisis and a councilman’s influence to claim a place as Crown Point’s problem-solver. Sofia and Salvatore Maroni press against the operation from another direction, and Sofia’s pursuit reaches the home of Oz’s mother. Sky’s episode recap.
Does Oz’s Gold Summit speech work?
The episode’s central gamble is its final gathering. Oz appeals to smaller operators’ resentment of established families and officials, selling unity as a route to power. His speech is not separate from the plot: it is a tool he uses to make a coalition possible. But the audience has watched him lie, improvise, and pursue his own advantage, so the same pitch that moves the room can also sound hollow.

That tension accounts for the critical split. Joe George at Den of Geek sees the scene as an intentional embrace of supervillain spectacle, describing the episode as “a turn toward the comic booky.” Its staging and swelling score make Oz’s performance feel like a declaration of what he is becoming. Den of Geek review.
William Hughes at The A.V. Club finds much of the episode riveting and tense, but doubts the force of Oz’s final pitch. His review asks why viewers should be persuaded by a habitual liar’s appeal to solidarity. The A.V. Club review. That skepticism is the right pressure point: Oz’s theatricality makes the summit exciting, but the scene is more convincing as an act of domination than as a sincere political argument. He does not need the smaller leaders to trust his character; he needs them to believe he can make their grievances useful.

Why the electricity crisis gives the episode weight
The power shortage gives Oz a concrete way to perform concern rather than simply announce ambition. Electricity and heat are allocated unevenly, with poorer neighborhoods bearing the cost while wealthier areas fare better. Oz uses the councilman and the crisis to assert himself in Crown Point, tying his bid for influence to a need residents can actually feel. The neighborhood’s hardship is both real within the story and useful to Oz, which keeps the episode’s civic detail from becoming a simple redemption beat.
This grounded conflict also sharpens the contrast with the summit’s operatic finish. The episode is at its most persuasive when power means both literal electricity and political control; the final speech makes the comic-book scale explicit. Those modes do not fully resolve into one another, but their friction is part of the episode’s point: Oz’s public utility and private ambition are difficult to separate.

How the character pairings shape the hour
Sofia and Salvatore
Sofia’s alliance with Salvatore Maroni keeps pressure on Oz’s expanding business. Their scenes give the conflict a strategic dimension: the threat is not only that Oz has enemies, but that those enemies can coordinate against him.
Sofia and Eve
Sofia’s encounter with Eve reveals vulnerability beneath her violence. The A.V. Club highlights Cristin Milioti’s ability to carry that emotional complexity. Sofia remains dangerous, but the scene makes her more than a mechanism for escalating the threat.

Oz and Victor
Victor’s connection to his past complicates his place beside Oz. Rather than functioning only as an assistant, he faces choices with personal consequences as his apprenticeship deepens. That gives Oz’s rise a cost beyond the shifting balance among gangs.

The closing turn, with Sofia reaching Oz’s mother’s home, gives the episode a clean threat beyond the summit’s performance. It makes Oz’s family part of the danger he has been trying to manage through business and political maneuvering. The ending lands because the episode has kept several pressures in motion—Victor’s past, the rivals’ alliance, and Oz’s own household—rather than relying on the speech alone to supply suspense.

“Gold Summit” is strongest when it lets practical need, fragile alliances, and personal history complicate Oz’s ambition. Its final set piece is deliberately oversized, and that theatricality is compelling if read as a villain’s show of force. If judged as a persuasive appeal to shared interests, it is less effective. The gap between those readings is the episode’s defining tension.
