Sofia takes her mother’s maiden name, Gigante, and offers Sal Maroni an alliance against Oz; Oz finds a possible new base in Gotham’s old trolley tunnels, but a blackout leaves that plan uncertain.
What happens in The Penguin episode 5?
After the Maronis attack, Oz burns his purple car and sets out to recover the mushrooms used to make Bliss. He kidnaps Taj Maroni, hoping to use him as leverage against the family. At the same time, news reports the mass deaths at the Falcone estate, and police question Sofia: the gas-leak explanation and Johnny Viti’s disappearance have drawn suspicion.
Sofia has Viti captive and tries to bring him under her new order. He invokes her mother’s history and urges Sofia to seek respect through him, but she refuses to restore his authority. As the Falcone power structure crumbles, Sofia’s niece Gia is taken to a children’s home.
Oz tells his crew not to mourn someone who did not know their names. He sends Victor to check on Francis, trusting Victor with his mother’s care. Francis briefly mistakes Oz for her son Jack. Meanwhile, Oz has paid a Blackgate guard to stab Sal Maroni.

Oz negotiates with Nadia Maroni for the mushrooms and releases Taj, but Maroni men ambush them. Oz has already doused Taj in petrol; during the confrontation, he sets Taj and Nadia alight. He then discovers that most of the mushroom crop is destroyed. The setback worsens when he learns Sal survived the prison attack and escaped.
Why does Sofia change her name to Gigante?
Sofia turns the Falcone family’s collapse into a public break with her father’s legacy. She admits her role in her family’s deaths, declares the Falcone family finished, and takes Gigante, her mother’s maiden name. When Viti objects, Sofia shoots him in front of the assembled crew. She then puts money on the table and promises payment, establishing that her new organization will command loyalty as well as fear.
Rank #2
The name change has a specific difference from the comic identity described by showrunner Lauren LeFranc. In the comics, LeFranc says, Sofia is Falcone-Gigante because she marries into a Gigante family. In the series, Sofia chooses her mother’s surname herself. LeFranc describes it as “Sofia’s moment of taking back power and declaring herself to the world.” That makes the change a self-definition, not a marriage tie.
Executive producer Matt Reeves frames Sofia’s choice as a rejection of her father’s “dark patriarchy.” Cristin Milioti, who plays Sofia, calls it “a last twist of the knife into her father’s legacy.” Those are the creators’ and actor’s readings of the moment, rather than dialogue spoken in the episode.

Why do Sofia and Sal join forces?
After Sal escapes, Sofia visits him and proposes that they end their families’ war and unite to kill Oz and take control of Gotham. The alliance is tactical: Oz is the shared target, and both have reason to challenge his growing power.
LeFranc explains that Sofia knows the Falcones have wronged the Maronis as well as her. That history gives her a basis for joining Sal even as she establishes a distinct identity for her own organization. The proposal is made in the episode; whether the alliance can hold is left open.

Sofia’s new family identity
By taking Gigante and publicly ending the Falcone era, Sofia claims a future that is not defined by Carmine. Her proposal to Sal shows that this new identity is also a political move: she is building power against Oz, not simply renaming herself.
Oz’s possible new hideout
Oz moves Francis to an abandoned apartment in Crown Point to protect her, then asks Eve to come with him. Eve refuses. In Gotham’s tunnels, Oz recognizes the old trolley routes as a possible concealed place to grow Bliss. The episode establishes the discovery, not an operational base.

The blackout
The lights cut out just as Oz appears to have found a way forward. The blackout makes his apparent progress precarious, but the episode does not explain its cause or confirm what happens to the tunnel plan. It is a cliffhanger, not proof that the base has failed—or that it will work.
How episode 5 changes the balance of power
- Oz’s operation: Taj and Nadia are dead, most of the mushroom crop is destroyed, and Sal is alive and free.
- Sofia’s organization: She has publicly taken command, rejected the Falcone name, and proposed an alliance with Sal.
- The next conflict: Sofia and Sal’s stated goal is to kill Oz and take the city, while Oz has only identified a possible new place to regroup.
Comic context for Sofia’s name
The series and the comic history discussed by LeFranc give Sofia’s Gigante name different origins. As she describes it, the comic version’s surname follows marriage into a Gigante family; the television version makes it Sofia’s chosen maternal name. Batman: The Long Halloween #6 is identified in the interview report as Sofia’s comic introduction. The comparison is useful context, but it does not mean the show reproduces the comic character’s backstory exactly.
