It continues the crime saga begun by Matt Reeves’ The Batman, with Lauren LeFranc as writer and showrunner. Here are seven spoiler-light facts about the series, its cast and creative team, and its original US release.
1. It’s an eight-episode crime drama
HBO described The Penguin as an eight-episode limited series, and DC’s official series page gives the same episode count. The format makes it a focused continuation of the Gotham story rather than an open-ended series. HBO’s announcement and DC’s series page both identify the show as an eight-episode drama.
2. It continues the story world of The Batman
HBO’s official description says the series continues filmmaker Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” epic crime saga. The show shifts attention to Oz Cobb and the Gotham underworld. The Batman (2022) provides franchise context, but the official descriptions do not say you must watch the film first.
3. Colin Farrell leads as Oz Cobb, also known as the Penguin
Farrell returns to the character he played in The Batman. HBO’s announcement identifies his role as Oz Cobb, “aka ‘The Penguin,’” while DC’s page also names him as the lead.

6. The original US premiere was September 19, 2024
Warner Bros. Discovery announced the US premiere for Thursday, September 19, 2024, on HBO and Max. The announcement scheduled episode two for Sunday, September 29, with subsequent episodes following on Sundays. That is the original US launch schedule, not a statement about current streaming availability or release dates in other countries. For example, a Warner Bros. Discovery announcement for Serbia gave a September 20, 2024 premiere on Max and HBO in that market.
Where to stream the series now depends on your country and the services carrying it there. The cited launch announcement establishes its original US platforms; it does not confirm today’s catalog availability.
