The pantsless trend was visible on the 2025 Met Gala carpet, but it took several forms: briefs, bodysuits, a unitard and a very short tuxedo dress. Vogue documented looks by Helen Lasichanh, Lisa, Sabrina Carpenter, Cynthia Erivo, Charli XCX, Hailey Bieber and Amelia Gray Hamlin. The gala took place May 5 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art under the dress code “Tailored for You,” alongside the Costume Institute exhibition “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.”
What “pantsless” meant on the 2025 Met Gala carpet
In Vogue’s roundup, “pantsless” describes a range of short or trouser-free silhouettes, not one uniform outfit. Some guests wore briefs or bodysuits; others chose a unitard, shorts beneath a skirt, or a tuxedo dress. The label therefore covers different garment constructions and degrees of exposure rather than meaning that every attendee wore underwear as outerwear.
Vogue reported that guests arrived in short shorts or “no shorts at all,” but did not give a count or percentage of attendees. The documented examples establish the trend’s presence, not how prevalent it was across the carpet.

How the looks fit the gala’s theme—and what they do not prove
The official dress code was “Tailored for You.” It accompanied “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” the Costume Institute exhibition about the emergence, significance and spread of Black dandyism and the ways sartorial style shaped Black identities. Vogue described the dress code as a nod to the exhibition’s focus on menswear and an invitation to creative interpretation. The exhibition ran May 10 through October 26, 2025.

That context makes tailoring an important part of the evening’s frame, but the sources do not establish that the pantsless looks were an official interpretation of the dress code or that guests chose them for a shared reason. A cropped blazer, tuxedo-dress silhouette or tailored jacket can be discussed as a relationship to tailoring; that is different from claiming the dress code caused the trend.
Guest curator Monica L. Miller described dandyism as more than surface display: “Dandyism can seem frivolous, but it often poses a challenge to or a transcendence of social and cultural hierarchies.” She added: “It asks questions about identity, representation, and mobility in relation to race, class, gender, sexuality, and power. This exhibition explores dandyism as both a pronouncement and a provocation.” Costume Institute curator in charge Andrew Bolton said the museum’s high-style menswear collection made it possible to translate Miller’s book Slaves to Fashion into an exhibition imagining and realizing a sartorial history of Black dandyism. These statements describe the exhibition’s intellectual scope; they should not be treated as a single explanation for every red-carpet outfit.

Vogue’s retrospective coverage also placed the carpet in a wider cultural setting: some attendees worked with Black creatives, stylists, designers and costume designers. It described Aimee Lou Wood’s Ahluwalia shorts suit as a nod to the Congolese Sapeurs and noted references by other guests to family and Black historical figures. That context is a reminder that the event was about more than hemlines, and that “Superfine” should not be reduced to a generic fashion prompt.

Vogue’s roundup names examples but does not quantify how many guests wore pantsless looks or what share of the carpet they represented. The available reporting also does not establish a common motive or a direct causal link to “Tailored for You.” The most precise conclusion is that the trend was documented at the gala in varied forms, while its overall scale and each wearer’s reasoning remain unstated.
