E. Hinton’s Greasers and Socs to the screen in 1983. More than 40 years later, its central cast is remembered both for the characters they played and for the very different careers that followed. Here’s who played Ponyboy, Johnny, Dallas and the rest—and a dated snapshot of what became of the performers.
Who played the Greasers and Socs in The Outsiders?
The film opened on March 25, 1983. The American Film Institute lists it as a 91-minute PG drama, directed by Francis Ford Coppola and produced in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Its cast paired young actors—including several who went on to become major screen stars—with Hinton’s memorable characters. The roles below follow S. E. Hinton’s official cast list.

How the cast’s careers developed
C. Thomas Howell and Matt Dillon
Howell’s Ponyboy is the film’s point of view, a sensitive teenager trying to make sense of violence and loyalty. The March 25, 2026 retrospective by AOL and Entertainment Weekly notes Howell’s later work in Southland and 1923. It also relays a comment from a 2021 Entertainment Weekly oral history in which Howell described the film as important to his life. Dillon, who played the volatile Dally, built a varied career after the film, with roles in Drugstore Cowboy, There’s Something About Mary and Crash. The 2026 retrospective also mentions the drama I Play Rocky; that reference alone does not establish whether the project has been released or completed.
Ralph Macchio and Patrick Swayze
Macchio’s Johnny Cade is the vulnerable friend at the heart of the story. His later screen work ranged from The Karate Kid and My Cousin Vinny to Cobra Kai and the 2025 film Karate Kid: Legends. Swayze played Darry, Ponyboy’s eldest brother, who shoulders responsibility for keeping the family together. His later leading roles included Dirty Dancing, Ghost, Road House and Point Break. He died in 2009 after pancreatic cancer.

Rob Lowe and Emilio Estevez
Lowe played Sodapop, the warm-hearted middle Curtis brother. His later television work included The West Wing, Parks and Recreation and 9-1-1: Lone Star. The 2026 retrospective described him as hosting The Floor and the podcast Literally! With Rob Lowe; hosting roles can change, so those should be understood as the retrospective’s dated account, not a live schedule. Estevez played the wisecracking Two-Bit. His subsequent work as an actor and director included The Breakfast Club, St. Elmo’s Fire, The Mighty Ducks and Bobby.
Tom Cruise, Diane Lane and Leif Garrett
Cruise’s Steve Randle is a supporting Greaser role from early in the actor’s screen career, before films such as Risky Business and Top Gun. Lane played Cherry Valance, a Soc whose encounters with Ponyboy complicate the divide between the rival groups. Her later work included Unfaithful, Under the Tuscan Sun, Man of Steel and Feud: Capote vs. the Swans. Garrett played Bob Sheldon, a Soc. The 2026 retrospective includes him in its cast review, but the available account does not provide enough detail to make a specific claim about his current work.

How faithful was the film to S. E. Hinton’s novel?
Hinton’s novel was published in 1967, and she characterized Coppola’s film as “a very faithful adaptation.” She also noted that some scenes she wished had made the final cut were left out. The film’s release and adaptation history are documented by Hinton’s official page and CBS News’ 2013 anniversary account.

The AOL/Entertainment Weekly article was published March 25, 2026, and reviews the careers of nine cast members. It is a dated snapshot, not a live directory of every performer’s current projects. Its mention of recent work is useful for tracing career paths, but a project described in future-oriented terms should not be treated as released, and a hosting credit should not be assumed to remain current. No streaming availability or current DVD stock is established by these career and film-history sources.

For physical-media history, CBS reported that Coppola re-released the Warner Bros. film on DVD in September 2005 with commentary, additional footage and music. That is a record of the 2005 release, not confirmation that a particular edition is currently available or that those extras appear in every edition.
