The Merry Gentlemen turns a small-town nightclub rescue into a Christmas-themed all-male revue, with a former dancer organizing the show and a romance in the wings. That premise promises dance-floor spectacle, but the film is best approached as a holiday romantic comedy with a revue at its center—not as a direct counterpart to Magic Mike. Netflix’s synopsis names Britt Robertson and Chad Michael Murray as its leads; it does not establish how much Murray dances or how the performances compare with that franchise.
What is The Merry Gentlemen about?
In this 2024 Netflix romantic comedy, a former big-city dancer returns to her small town and stages an all-male, Christmas-themed revue to save her parents’ performing venue. The show’s preparations bring her into contact with a man who, in Netflix’s synopsis, has “all the right moves.” The setup ties the central romance to the nightclub’s effort to survive.

The movie stars Britt Robertson as Ashley, Chad Michael Murray as Luke, and Marla Sokoloff as Marie. Peter Sullivan directed; Sokoloff wrote the film as well as appearing in it. Netflix frames the story as a comedy, while the revue supplies its performance hook.
Does the film deliver a ‘Magic Mike’ experience?
“Magic Mike” is a useful shorthand for the premise of men performing a revue, but it is not evidence that the films share a style, level of sensuality, choreography, or quality. The documented setup here is specifically a Christmas romantic comedy about staging a show to rescue a family venue. The available official descriptions do not establish scene-by-scene choreography, how revealing the performances are, or how much Murray dances.
#1 Best Overall
Murray plays Luke, one of the romantic leads. Speaking to Netflix Tudum about the role, he said, “We got to change things up a little bit and push the envelope.” That is the actor describing the project, not an independent assessment of how daring or successful the finished performances are. If your priority is sustained dance spectacle, the premise alone cannot guarantee that; if you want a seasonal romance built around a revue, the setup is more directly aligned with that expectation.
Is The Merry Gentlemen worth watching?
It may suit viewers who like a familiar holiday-romance framework with an unusual small-town show-business hook. The story combines a venue-saving mission, a Christmas revue, and a developing romance rather than presenting itself as a dance film alone.

Reception has been mixed-to-negative in the Rotten Tomatoes snapshot recorded on October 7, 2026: the site displayed a 39% Tomatometer from 18 critic reviews and a 22% Popcornmeter from 100+ ratings. Those are time-sensitive aggregator figures, not a universal verdict, and the review and rating totals can change. They are a reason to keep expectations measured, not a substitute for deciding whether the premise appeals to you.
