Its story begins when Maya posts a cryptic message, goes offline and disappears from her friends’ awareness. Identified by ISBN 9789360456887, the Tranquebar book follows her retreat to her Auntie Chini’s home and explores trauma, grief, family ties, therapy, spirituality and the performance of life on social media.
What is The Other Sister about?
Maya’s withdrawal from social media sets the plot in motion. As her friends respond to her disappearance, the novel turns toward the distance between being visible online and being understood by the people around you. Maya takes refuge with her Auntie Chini, and the story follows her efforts to make sense of her life through therapy, spiritual searching and encounters with family secrets.
The narrative moves between October 2023 and February or March 2024, with flashes of Maya’s childhood and earlier experiences. This shifting structure links her present-day crisis to the memories and relationships that shape it. The bibliographic synopsis and Mandira Nayar’s 2025 review describe the plot; this is not a clinical account of mental health.
How does the novel explore loneliness and social media?
The novel’s central tension is not simply that people spend too much time online. It is that social visibility can coexist with isolation: a person can post, appear connected and still feel unseen. Nayar reads the book as a critique of social media’s pressure to perform a life for others, while noting the difficulty of building bonds that extend beyond surface-level contact.

In the review, Nayar quotes fictional therapist Reena Gupta describing how social media can make people “more exposed but less seen.” The line is a character’s dialogue, not an expert’s independent finding. The novel’s concern is the human cost of confusing exposure or activity with intimacy.
What themes shape Maya’s story?
Trauma, coping and grief
Nayar’s review foregrounds trauma, grief and the stories people tell about themselves and one another. Maya’s dissociative identity disorder is a plot detail in the novel, not a basis for generalizing about people with the diagnosis. The book places her struggle within a wider web of coping, memory and relationships rather than offering mental-health guidance.
Rank #2
Family, secrets and motherhood
Family relationships and secrets are part of the novel’s account of how people understand their pasts. The focus on Maya and Auntie Chini’s household gives her withdrawal a physical setting, while the story’s memories connect present isolation with earlier family experiences. Nayar also identifies motherhood as one of the novel’s concerns.
Spirituality and the promise of quick answers
Maya’s search takes in spirituality and godmen. The review presents spirituality as a readily available way of coping, but also raises the risk of treating it as a quick fix. That tension places spiritual seeking alongside therapy and the slower, more difficult work of understanding pain.

What makes the novel unconventional?
The book combines a contemporary social-media crisis with a non-linear account of memory, family life and trauma. Rather than treating Maya’s disappearance as a mystery to solve, it uses the event to examine what connection means when online presence and real-life closeness do not match. Nayar characterizes the novel as brave and urgent; those are the reviewer’s judgments, not neutral facts about the book.
Readers looking for a straightforward account of social media or a guide to mental health should know that this is a novel: its themes are carried through Maya’s story and the relationships around her.
