Carrey’s “spineless” criticism was aimed at Hollywood’s response to Smith’s win, not just at the slap itself.
What happened at the 2022 Oscars
During the live ceremony, Chris Rock made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s hair. Will Smith then walked onto the stage and slapped Rock. Pinkett Smith had spoken publicly about alopecia, a condition that can cause hair loss. The Los Angeles Times recounts the joke and slap in the ceremony’s sequence.
Later that night, Smith won the lead actor award for King Richard. He received a standing ovation. It was that reaction to the win, following the onstage assault, that Carrey singled out in a CBS interview with Gayle King. The accounts describe a standing ovation but do not establish that every person in the audience stood. Vanity Fair reported Carrey’s remarks.
Why Carrey called Hollywood “spineless”
Carrey objected to the audience applauding Smith after the slap. He told King: “I was sickened by the standing ovation. Hollywood is just spineless en masse, and it really felt like it was a clear indication that we aren’t the cool club anymore.” The phrase was Carrey’s judgment of the response; it should not be read as evidence that every attendee approved of Smith’s actions.

He also said Smith should have been escorted from the Dolby Theatre and argued: “You do not have the right to walk up onstage and smack somebody in the face because they said words.” Carrey said he had nothing against Smith personally, while describing the act as selfish and saying it cast a pall over the moment for the other winners. Entertainment Tonight also reported Carrey’s reaction to the ovation.
What Carrey meant by the $200 million remark
In the same interview, Carrey said that if he were in Rock’s position, he would announce a $200 million lawsuit because video of the incident would remain widely available. This was a hypothetical statement about what Carrey said he would do—not a report that Rock filed a $200 million lawsuit or that a court awarded that amount.

Smith’s apology
Smith later apologized publicly to Rock, writing: “My behavior at last night’s Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable.” That apology followed the incident and Carrey’s criticism of the ovation; it does not change which moment Carrey said had sickened him.
