The original Engelbert Humperdinck was a German composer, not the later singer who shared his name. His best-known opera, Hänsel und Gretel, sets the Brothers Grimm fairy tale to music, with a libretto by his sister Adelheid Wette. It premiered in Weimar on 23 December 1893.
Who was the original Engelbert Humperdinck?
Engelbert Humperdinck (1854–1921) was a German composer whose name is often confused with that of the later popular singer. The composer is remembered chiefly for Hänsel und Gretel, an opera that turned a familiar fairy tale into a work of musical theatre. The Metropolitan Opera’s educator guide identifies Humperdinck as a composer and notes his work with Richard Wagner in Bayreuth.
How did the Grimm fairy tale become an opera?
In 1890, Humperdinck’s sister Adelheid Wette asked him to compose music for a children’s performance based on the Grimm brothers’ tale. The small project developed into a full opera, with Wette writing the libretto. Her version adapts the source for the stage rather than reproducing it scene by scene: the Paris Opera account says she simplified the story for dramatic effect and to limit its length and violence.
The basic fairy-tale elements remain: two children lose their way in a forest and encounter a witch at a house filled with sweets. But the opera also grounds the adventure in family hardship. The children are hungry, and the household’s poverty helps set their journey in motion. Staatsoper Berlin describes the family’s everyday circumstances as life on the breadline, giving the magical forest story a stark domestic starting point.

What makes Humperdinck’s score distinctive?
The music brings together accessible songs and richly developed orchestral writing. The Paris Opera describes children’s songs, popular melodies and recurring themes in the score. Staatsoper Berlin connects its symphonic scale with Wagner’s music dramas, while also emphasizing the work’s childlike melodies and magical nature imagery.
That combination is why the opera is more than a simple collection of children’s tunes. Familiar, singable passages sit within a carefully composed score that supports the shifts from domestic strain to forest enchantment and danger.

When and where did Hänsel und Gretel premiere?
The opera’s world premiere took place at the Weimar Court Theater on 23 December 1893. The Metropolitan Opera guide names Richard Strauss as conductor. Deutsche Oper Berlin and the publisher Boosey & Hawkes also give the date and Weimar setting.
The work has since become a lasting part of family and seasonal opera repertory, as reflected in current production pages from Deutsche Oper Berlin and Bayerische Staatsoper. That enduring presence explains its reputation without requiring an unsupported ranking or audience statistic.
