Hulu adapted it from Carola Lovering’s novel, which is fiction—but Lovering has said a person from her past inspired Stephen DeMarco. She has not named that person in her published account and stresses that he “isn’t actually the character.”
Is Tell Me Lies based on a true story?
The Hulu series is adapted from Lovering’s novel of the same name, according to Hulu’s official series page. The novel is a work of fiction. Lovering has described a real relationship that informed some of its emotional material, but that does not make the book—or the television series—a factual account of what happened.

There are two creative steps between Lovering’s experience and the show: she drew on lived experience while writing a fictional novel, and Hulu then adapted that novel for television. Plot events and character behavior should not be treated as verified events from Lovering’s life.
Who is the real Stephen?
Lovering has acknowledged that a person from her past inspired Stephen DeMarco, but she has not identified him by name in her 2019 first-person account for The Cut. She also draws a clear distinction between the inspiration and the fictional character: the person “isn’t actually the character.” There is no reliable basis in that account for naming a real person as “the real Stephen.”

In the essay, Lovering recalls a complicated relationship involving secrecy, other partners, and an intense on-and-off attachment. Those are her personal recollections, not independently verified details about an identifiable person. They also do not establish that the series’ story happened as depicted.
Online speculation, including an unverified anecdote repeated in a Reddit discussion, is not evidence of the person’s identity. The responsible answer is that Lovering has described an unnamed inspiration, not disclosed a name.

Stephen DeMarco, Jackson White, and the unnamed inspiration
“Who is the real Stephen?” can refer to three different things. Keeping them separate avoids confusing a character, an actor, and a source of inspiration.
| Referent | What is established |
|---|---|
| Stephen DeMarco | A fictional character in the novel and television adaptation. |
| Jackson White | The actor who plays Stephen in the Hulu series, as identified by Hulu. He is not thereby identified as the character’s inspiration. |
| The person who inspired aspects of Stephen | Lovering says a person from her past inspired the character, but her cited account does not name him. |
What the creators have said about the show’s relationships
Showrunner Meaghan Oppenheimer has discussed taking young relationships seriously rather than treating them as trivial. In a 2024 interview with the Associated Press, she said, “This age is so important, and I think most people when they write about YA, they don’t take it seriously.” The AP interview offers context for the show’s attention to the emotional weight of relationships, not evidence that its plot is a true account.

Oppenheimer also addressed why people can become involved in unhealthy dynamics. In a 2022 Vanity Fair interview, she said, “There’s some misconception that only people that are completely blindsided or naive or stupid or whatever fall for these kind of things. But it’s not the case.” Her comments describe the show’s perspective on its characters; they do not confirm a real-life counterpart for Stephen.

The source text is Lovering’s novel, Tell Me Lies—a fictional book, not a memoir. Hulu’s current series listing identifies Oppenheimer as creator and, as of October 8, 2026, lists three seasons and 26 episodes. Catalogue details and viewing availability can change by date and territory.
