The Oneida Community was a religious communal society founded in Central New York in 1848 by John Humphrey Noyes. Its members called their relationship system “complex marriage”; “free love” is a familiar shorthand, but it can obscure the religious rules and communal responsibilities the group said governed it. Charles Guiteau, later the assassin of President James A. Garfield, joined the community, a part of his past dramatized in Netflix’s Death by Lightning.

What was the Oneida Community?

Oneida was a Perfectionist religious community established under Noyes in 1848. Its members shared property and organized aspects of domestic and family life communally. The Oneida Community Mansion House says nearly 300 people lived there for nearly 30 years. The community eventually disbanded in 1880 amid external pressures and internal strife, according to the Mansion House’s institutional history.

Oneida was also an economic enterprise. Its businesses included animal traps, silk thread, and silverware; the National Park Service describes these industries as part of the community’s later prosperity. The goods and business organization survived the communal experiment: Syracuse University Libraries records the transfer of the community’s business and property to Oneida Community, Limited in 1881.

What did “complex marriage” mean at Oneida?

Members called their system “complex marriage.” The familiar label “free love” is incomplete: it may suggest casual relationships without lasting obligations, whereas Oneida’s members described a bounded system tied to membership, communal property, responsibility, and care for children.

The community’s own 1867 Hand-book of the Oneida Community defended its understanding of the arrangement in stark terms: “Free love with us does not mean freedom to love to-day and leave to-morrow; nor freedom to take a woman’s person and keep our property to ourselves; nor freedom to freight a woman with our offspring and send her down stream without care or help; nor freedom to beget children and leave them to the street and the poor-house.”

That passage is the community’s argument for its system, not a neutral account of how every member experienced it. It is useful evidence of how members presented their beliefs and obligations, but it should not be mistaken for an independent assessment of the community’s relationships. Syracuse University Libraries provides a digitized edition of the 1867 handbook.

Was Charles Guiteau part of a “free love” community?

Yes. Charles Guiteau, who later assassinated President James A. Garfield, was part of the Oneida Community. Netflix’s explainer for Death by Lightning says the series portrays Guiteau struggling to fit in there. The episode helps connect his life to the drama’s wider story, but the show’s dialogue and scenes are dramatization, not primary historical evidence.

Netflix executive producer Mike Makowsky described the series’ approach as a contrast between Garfield and his eventual killer: “Candice really honed in on this parallel structure, where she was constantly weighing this great man, James Garfield, against the man who would kill him, Guiteau.” That quotation explains the creators’ framing; it does not independently establish every detail of Guiteau’s time at Oneida. The available institutional and archival accounts cited here do not provide a detailed, independently sourced chronology of his membership, departures, or treatment by other members.

What happened to the Oneida Community?

The end came in stages, so dates that may look inconsistent refer to different events. The National Park Service says complex marriage was abandoned in 1879. The Mansion House dates the community’s dissolution to 1880. The National Park Service gives January 1, 1881, as the date the company was incorporated. Syracuse University Libraries likewise records the transfer of business and property to Oneida Community, Limited in 1881.

The distinction matters: ending complex marriage was not the same event as dissolving the communal society or incorporating its successor business. Oneida’s commercial legacy, including its silverware, continued after the community itself ended.

How can you check the history beyond the series?

For Oneida’s members’ own account, consult Syracuse University Libraries’ digitized 1867 handbook, keeping in mind that it is a self-description. For institutional history and material context, the Mansion House collections page describes a collection of more than 30,000 objects related to the community. The Mansion House building was constructed in stages from 1861 to 1878.

Readers who want a book-length treatment of the connection between Oneida and the assassination can look for Susan Wels’s An Assassin in Utopia: The True Story of a Nineteenth-Century Sex Cult and a President’s Murder. The historical account should be kept distinct from Death by Lightning: the series is an adaptation, while the handbook, institutional histories, and archival records offer different kinds of evidence.
