Dan Chase survives the poisoning, Emily is alive, and she reunites with Chase and Zoe—but the finale ends with Harold Harper missing and Emily asking Chase to become Lou Barlow again. “Hide and Seek,” the Season 2 finale, sets up a rescue mission that never reached the screen: FX cancelled The Old Man after two seasons.
Is Dan Chase dead at the end of “Hide and Seek”?
No. Chase appears to be dying after he is poisoned, and Zoe finds him in critical condition. Following Julian Carson’s directions, she gives Chase the antidote and attempts CPR when it seems not to work. The episode then reveals that Chase has recovered: he is alive with Zoe at a safe house.

The apparent death is a fake-out, but his survival does not settle the danger around him. Chase and Zoe’s quiet time together gives way to a package at their mailbox containing a burner phone and a number. The call takes them to a diner.
How does Emily survive, and what happened to her?
Emily is alive. Earlier in the episode, the story reveals that she survived being held by Russian mercenaries and escaped by using a guard’s vodka bottle to knock him out. Her disappearance had left Chase and Harper without the full picture of what happened to her.

At the diner, Emily reunites with Chase and Zoe. She says she will explain what happened to her later, then turns to the immediate crisis: Harper has disappeared. In an interview with TheWrap, series developer and executive producer Jonathan E. Steinberg described the scene’s emotional tone: “By the time you get to the diner scene, I wanted it to be like she’s been through so much and she has nothing else to hide.”
Why is Harold Harper missing?
Harper learns that Marion wants to turn Emily into a Chinese asset. Marion also tells him that local fighters have taken the mine from the Russians, led by an American woman. Harper realizes that the woman is Emily and wants to rescue her.

But Emily tells Chase that Marion is using Harper to bargain for control of the mine. Emily says she now controls it herself. That changes the immediate balance of power, but it does not bring Harper back: he remains missing when the finale ends.
Why does Emily ask Chase to become Lou Barlow again?
Emily believes she needs Lou Barlow to get Harper back. Lou is the identity Chase associates with his more violent past, and he hesitates because returning to those methods would expose Zoe to a darker part of his life.

That tension gives the reunion its unresolved edge. Chase has survived and found Emily, but helping her may mean abandoning the life he has tried to build with Zoe. As cars arrive to take them away, Emily has also tracked Zoe’s phone. The episode cuts off before the group’s next move or Harper’s fate is revealed.
How do Julian and Zoe help Chase?
Julian Carson offers Zoe a way to find Chase if she helps him kill Pavlovich. Harper’s instructions and Marion’s arrangements allow Julian to enter Pavlovich’s compound, where he kills Pavlovich. Zoe then uses a Russian vehicle’s GPS to locate Chase, and Julian’s directions lead her to the antidote.

Does the finale resolve the story? Is there a Season 3?
No. The finale resolves the question of whether Chase survives and reunites him with Emily, but it ends with Harper missing and a new rescue mission just beginning. The ending therefore functions as a cliffhanger, not a completed resolution.
FX cancelled The Old Man after two seasons in December 2024, so the setup was not continued in a third season. FX’s official series page describes Season 2 as a mission involving former CIA agent Dan Chase and former FBI Assistant Director Harold Harper. The show is based on Thomas Perry’s novel The Old Man, but the finale’s television cliffhanger should not be assumed to be resolved by the book.
