The Brutalist is a 2024 historical drama directed by Brady Corbet and co-written with Mona Fastvold. Adrien Brody plays László Tóth, a Hungarian-born Jewish architect who emigrates to the United States after World War II. The film follows his attempt to rebuild his life and career—and the personal costs of a powerful patron’s commission.
What is The Brutalist about?
In the film’s story, Tóth arrives in the United States in 1947 and initially struggles in poverty. A commission from wealthy industrialist Harrison Lee Van Buren gives him a major professional opportunity and sets the course of the next thirty years of his life. The work brings challenges as well as advancement, affecting Tóth’s personal life and career.

Brody plays Tóth; Felicity Jones plays his wife, Erzsébet; and Guy Pearce plays Van Buren. Their relationships place the film’s architectural ambition alongside questions of identity, immigrant life, patronage and power. It also considers the tension between escaping fascism in Europe and encountering the demands of capitalism in postwar America. In a December 11, 2024 interview hosted by A24 Awards, Jones described that ideological tension as “fleeing fascism and falling straight into the arms of capitalism.” Read the interview at A24 Awards.
Is The Brutalist based on a true story?
The official festival and awards descriptions present László Tóth as the protagonist of the film’s story; they do not establish that he is a real person or that the film is based on a true story. It is safest to describe the film as a historical drama about a fictional architect rather than a biography or a verified account of real events.
