What happens in The Old Man season 2 episode 6?
“XIII” divides its attention between two uneasy partnerships: Chase and Zoe follow a lead in London, while Harper tries to pull Julian Carson back into the dangerous world he has been trying to leave. The official FX episode guide describes the setup as Chase and Zoe tracking down Hamzad’s lawyer while Harper seeks an unlikely partner. The episode was released October 10, 2024, and Apple TV lists its runtime as 37 minutes and its director as Uta Briesewitz.
Why does Harper need Julian?
Julian, played by Gbenga Akinnagbe, seems to be building a quieter life after his covert work. He reconnects with a woman he helped in the previous season, and the possibility of an ordinary relationship appears within reach. Harper arrives because he believes Bote sent Julian one last email. Julian first denies having received it.
Harper warns that Bote’s death leaves people in his circle less protected, putting Julian and his girlfriend at risk. Julian eventually gives Harper a printout of the message. Its photograph shows a group of people, including Pavlovich—and Marion, Harper’s ex-wife, played by Janet McTeer. That recognition makes the investigation personal: Bote’s evidence connects Harper’s own past to the conspiracy.

Who is Nina Kruger in The Old Man?
Nina Kruger is Hamzad’s lawyer, and Chase and Zoe believe she may know why Pavlovich is interested in Hamzad’s mineral deposit. Traveling under the assumed identities Henry and Marcia Dixon, they try to reach her through her assistant, Anna. Anna will not disclose Kruger’s location, so Chase pressures her to place a call while Zoe listens remotely. The call provides a number and a location. The episode presents the improvised listening device as a fictional espionage gadget, not as a real-world method.
The London search also advances Zoe’s personal story. She is learning to use empathy and manipulation as tools, but worries that she is becoming someone who breaks things and cannot trust other people. Chase recognizes the fear behind that confession and tries to reassure her with a memory of Abbey. Their exchange gives the investigation an emotional counterweight: Zoe’s competence is growing, but she is unsure what it is costing her.

What does Kruger reveal about Pavlovich?
At Kruger’s country home, Chase finds her dying after an intruder has released an airborne toxin. Kruger says the attacker failed to find a hidden drive. Before she dies, she explains that Hamzad’s deposit is one of several rare-earth deposits in politically unstable regions. Their controllers are forming a cartel, and Pavlovich is connected to it.
That revelation is an in-story explanation of the forces behind the episode’s conflict, not a claim about a real cartel. Kruger’s account also raises the stakes for Pavlovich: his relationship with Chase and Zoe threatens his standing with the other members of the group.

Why does Chase surrender at the end of “XIII”?
Chase has been exposed to the toxin and believes Pavlovich’s men are the only people who can give him an antidote. He sends Zoe away, then allows the men to capture him. The decision turns what might have been a rescue into a calculated surrender: Chase is betting that his captors can keep him alive, even as he puts himself in their hands.
The episode closes on that immediate danger rather than resolving it. Zoe is left to act without Chase, while Harper’s discovery of Marion’s place in Bote’s evidence opens another front in the investigation.
