The episode is officially titled “X” on FX and Disney+; “Daddy Issues” is the title used for this recap. Its ending turns Angela’s identity crisis into a decisive act: she names herself Parwana Hamzad and kills Omar after he threatens the people around her.
What happens in The Old Man season 2 episode 3?
“X” picks up in the cave, where Faraz Hamzad has the advantage over Dan Chase. Harold Harper shoots Hamzad to save Chase. Angela arrives after hearing the gunshot and finds Harper has shot her biological father to protect the man she considers her real father. She is happy to see Chase, while Harper is wounded by the reunion and what it says about their relationship.
Angela’s concern is getting Hamzad back to the village, where Omar and Taliban forces are waiting. Chase and Harper agree to help because both want to protect her. Hamzad’s return, however, puts him and the village directly in the path of Omar’s demands.
Why is the village under threat?
Khadija tries to keep Omar occupied as the village weighs the danger Hamzad’s actions have brought upon it. Tarik arrives by helicopter with money, hoping to persuade Omar to leave. He explains that Morgan Bote cut off the community’s funding after Hamzad went rogue and kidnapped Angela, leaving the villagers exposed to both American and Taliban enemies. Omar refuses the payment.

At the village, Angela sees Faruza dead. When Omar demands to know who she is, she answers, “Parwana Hamzad,” and stabs him in the neck. Harper has arranged a special-forces helicopter through Marion and redirects it to attack the Taliban while Chase provides covering fire with a rifle. As Omar tries to crawl away, Angela shoots him twice in the head.
What does Angela’s choice mean?
The episode’s title framing points toward its central conflict: Chase, Harper, and Hamzad each claim a father’s place in Angela’s life. FX describes the season as an effort by Chase and Harper to recover Emily after Hamzad kidnaps her, with all three men claiming her as their daughter and leaving her in an identity crisis (FX’s series page).

But Angela’s final choice is more than a decision about which father to follow. By going with Hamzad and naming herself Parwana Hamzad, she asserts an identity of her own. Her attack on Omar after Faruza’s death makes that new agency concrete: she is willing to act, and to kill, to defend the people and identity she has chosen. This reading follows the events of the episode as recounted by Ready Steady Cut’s recap, published September 20, 2024 and updated September 27, 2024.
The village storyline adds another consequence to Hamzad’s pursuit of Angela. Tarik’s account of the funding cutoff makes clear that the kidnapping has put the wider community at risk, not just the men searching for her. Khadija is left trying to lead people through a danger created by Hamzad’s personal choices.
