Tom Holland plays Telemachus, the son of Odysseus, in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. Early set photos appeared before his character was identified; later first-look coverage and official materials confirmed the role. The film opened worldwide on July 17, 2026, and Universal’s film page now lists it as playing.
Who does Tom Holland play in The Odyssey?
Holland plays Telemachus, Odysseus’s only child. According to the Associated Press, Telemachus has not seen his father since he was a baby. As an adult, he sets out to learn what happened to Odysseus while the suitors’ threat to his household grows. The film follows that search alongside Odysseus’s journey home, giving the epic a coming-of-age thread as well as its homecoming adventure. The AP’s character guide describes Holland as portraying Odysseus’s son; Universal’s press article also identifies Holland as Telemachus.

What do the first-look photos show?
The phrase “first-look photos” has referred to more than one reveal. A March 2025 report showed Holland in costume but said his character had not yet been identified. Telemachus was speculation at that point, not a confirmed identification. Later first-look coverage in November 2025 named him as Telemachus, and official materials subsequently confirmed the casting. The indexed March 2025 set-photo report and November 2025 coverage reflect those separate stages.
The images alone should not be treated as proof of a character’s identity or plot details. The later confirmation comes from named coverage and official cast information, not from interpreting costume details.

How Holland’s role fits Nolan’s film
Universal describes The Odyssey as a mythic action epic based on Homer’s saga. Nolan wrote and directed the film, and produced it with Emma Thomas under their Syncopy banner; Thomas Hayslip is executive producer. The official cast listing includes Matt Damon, Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya and Charlize Theron. Universal identifies Hathaway as Penelope and Holland as Telemachus. Universal’s film page has the current release status and cast details.
Holland told the AP that the movie’s scale does not come at the expense of “the heart and the intimacy between our characters.” Nolan called Homer’s story “the ultimate adventure story” and said the film was being made for audiences with a range of relationships to the foundational text. The AP’s coverage includes those comments and further character context.

The IMAX description depends on the source’s wording: Universal calls it the first film shot entirely with IMAX cameras, while the AP calls it the first feature shot entirely on IMAX film. These are source-specific formulations and should not be collapsed into a single quote. Universal and the AP production feature use the respective descriptions.
Other production figures reported by the AP include:
- Six countries: filming took place in Greece, Italy, Morocco, Iceland, Scotland and the United States.
- 91 shooting days: production finished nine days early after six months, according to the AP.
- 172 minutes: the AP reported this runtime.
These figures describe the film’s production and reported runtime, not the number or performance of Holland’s photos.
