The Northman is Robert Eggers’s fictional Viking Age revenge epic, rooted in the old Amleth story that also belongs to the source tradition behind Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Its historical detail and Norse mythology give the film a researched period texture, but it is not a biography of a verified Viking prince.
What is The Northman about?
Directed by Robert Eggers, The Northman follows Amleth, a Viking prince who sets out to avenge his father’s murder, save his mother and reclaim his kingdom. Focus Features classifies it as action, adventure and drama; the official synopsis centers on that revenge quest. The principal cast includes Alexander Skarsgård, Nicole Kidman, Claes Bang, Anya Taylor-Joy, Ethan Hawke, Björk and Willem Dafoe. Its listed runtime is 2 hours 17 minutes, and its theatrical release date was April 22, 2022. Focus Features’ film page has the official synopsis and credits.
Is The Northman based on a true story?
Not in the sense of dramatizing a documented individual’s life. Amleth is a legendary figure in a story recorded by Danish historian Saxo in an early-13th-century work. Eggers relocates and reshapes that literary material as Viking Age historical fiction. The story has a historical-literary ancestry; that does not establish that its prince, revenge plot or specific events happened as shown.
How is The Northman connected to Hamlet?
The connection is the Amleth revenge-story tradition. Saxo’s account is an early version of the tale, and that tradition later inspired Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Eggers’s film draws on Amleth’s story, rather than adapting Shakespeare’s play. The shared ancestry explains the family betrayal and revenge premise; it does not mean that every plot detail in the film comes from an ancient account.

How historically accurate is the film?
It is more useful to separate the film’s historical texture from its plot and supernatural elements than to give it a single accuracy score. Archaeologist Neil Price, a historical consultant on the production, has emphasized that evidence for the period has gaps. Material details and cultural research can make a work feel grounded without proving that its dramatic events are historically documented.
Material culture and reconstruction
The production aimed to make Viking-era life and ritual part of the film’s world. That effort is distinct from evidence that a particular scene or character existed. As Eggers explained in a Focus Features interview, using a simple, familiar narrative gave him room to explore rituals, mythology and culture. That is a statement of artistic intent, not independent confirmation of historical accuracy. Read the Focus Features interview with Robert Eggers.

Literary story and mythology
The film combines the Amleth legend with Norse mythology and supernatural elements. Those parts belong to its storytelling, not to a verified record of one Viking prince’s life.
