Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope ended on the road outside Thunder Bay on September 1, 1980, but the effort to raise money for cancer research continued. Fox ran 5,373 kilometres (3,339 miles) in 143 days before cancer in his lungs forced him to stop. The Terry Fox Foundation says its cumulative fundraising for cancer research passed $1 billion on February 4, 2026—a later total spanning decades of work, not the original run alone.

What was Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope?

In 1977, at age 18, Terry Fox was diagnosed with osteogenic sarcoma, a bone cancer, in his right leg. The Terry Fox Foundation says his leg was amputated 15 centimetres (six inches) above the knee. His experience in hospital, including seeing other cancer patients suffer, inspired him to plan a cross-Canada run to raise awareness and money for cancer research.

Fox began the Marathon of Hope in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, on April 12, 1980. He aimed to run close to a marathon—about 42 kilometres (26 miles)—each day. His route crossed Newfoundland and Labrador, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec and Ontario. The Foundation says he visited more than 400 towns, schools and cities, sometimes starting as early as 4:30 a.m. and running until 7 p.m.

Fox described his ambition this way: “I want to set an example that will never be forgotten.” The Foundation attributes the statement to him on its Terry Fox story page.

How far did Terry Fox run, and why did he stop?

Fox ran 5,373 kilometres (3,339 miles) over 143 days. On September 1, 1980, outside Thunder Bay, worsening pain led him to stop and go to hospital. Cancer had appeared in his lungs. The Foundation’s account of his story and its timeline document the halt; the timeline recounts Fox asking his friend and driver Doug to take him to hospital and calling his parents.

The Foundation’s timeline gives Fox’s final journal entry as: “21 miles. 3,339 miles total.” The entry captures the distance he had covered, but not the finish he had hoped to reach: the run did not cross the rest of Canada.

How much did the original Marathon of Hope raise?

The Terry Fox Foundation says the Marathon of Hope fund had reached $24.17 million by February 1, 1981. The Foundation presents that early total as fulfilling Fox’s goal of raising one dollar for every Canadian. It is a dated figure for the original fund, not a cumulative total for all fundraising carried out in his name since then.

What continued after Terry Fox died?

Fox died on June 28, 1981, aged 22. The public fundraising effort continued through the Terry Fox Run and the Terry Fox Foundation, supporting cancer research in the years that followed.

On February 4, 2026, the Foundation announced that cumulative funds raised for cancer research had surpassed $1 billion and that more than 1,300 research projects had received funding. It also reported that more than 15,000 cancer patients were represented in a national research resource. These are the Foundation’s announced cumulative figures as of that date; they measure decades of fundraising and research support, not the money raised by Fox during his 1980 run.

How does the Marathon of Hope continue in cancer research?

The Marathon of Hope Cancer Centres Network extends the legacy into collaborative research. The network’s aim is to connect Canadian cancer centres and accelerate precision medicine. That is a research goal, not a claim that a cure has been achieved.

In the Foundation’s February 4, 2026 announcement, Kirsten Fox, Terry’s niece and the Foundation’s Director of Community Development for BC & Yukon, said: “When Terry set out on his Marathon of Hope, his mission was to raise awareness and funds for cancer research,” Dr. Jim Woodgett, President and Scientific Director of the Terry Fox Research Institute, added: “But we can’t and won’t slow down now.”

The lasting marathon is therefore two connected efforts: Fox’s unfinished journey across Canada and the fundraising and research work carried forward in his name. The distance, original fund and later cumulative total belong to different moments in that story.
