The Mothman legend began with reports of a large, red-eyed winged figure near Point Pleasant, West Virginia, in November 1966. Later accounts connected the sightings to the fatal Silver Bridge collapse in 1967, but the available sources establish a cultural association—not that a creature caused or predicted the disaster.
What is the Mothman legend?
Mothman is a legendary figure in West Virginia folklore, associated especially with Point Pleasant and the former TNT Area, a site north of town tied to wartime munitions production. The story centers on reports of a large winged figure with bright red eyes. Those descriptions are witness accounts, not independently verified evidence of an unknown species. Point Pleasant’s municipal history dates the first reported sighting to 1966; the Smithsonian’s account recounts the best-known encounter on November 15.
What did witnesses report in 1966?
According to the Smithsonian account, two couples—Roger and Linda Scarberry and Steve and Mary Mallette—said they encountered a six-to-seven-foot figure with bright red eyes while driving near the former munitions site. They reported that it appeared to follow their car. The next day, the Point Pleasant Register described the report in a headline: “Couples See Man-Sized Bird…Creature…Something!” The contemporary coverage documents the story’s early public telling; it does not verify what the witnesses saw. A West Virginia University Extension account also recounts the encounter.
Point Pleasant’s municipal history says more than 100 sightings were documented over the following year. That is the number of reports recorded in the local history, not a verified count of encounters with a confirmed creature. National media attention helped turn the local reports into the story of Point Pleasant’s “Bird Man.”

How did Mothman become linked to the Silver Bridge?
The Silver Bridge connected Point Pleasant with Gallipolis, Ohio. It collapsed during rush hour on December 15, 1967, killing 46 people, according to Point Pleasant’s municipal history. The disaster prompted bridge inspections across the country.
Some people later connected the Mothman reports with the collapse, while others did not, as the Smithsonian account notes. The association became part of the legend, but the sources do not establish that Mothman warned of, caused, or had any connection to the collapse. The bridge disaster was a real tragedy; it is important to distinguish its documented history from paranormal interpretation.

How did the story spread?
The West Virginia Encyclopedia treats Mothman as one of the state’s legendary monsters and describes stories and theories attached to the figure, including the Silver Bridge association and a supposed curse attributed in popular theory to Shawnee Chief Cornstalk. These are elements of folklore and popular interpretation, not established historical explanations.
John Keel’s The Mothman Prophecies helped bring Mothman and Point Pleasant to a national audience, and the 2002 film adaptation spread the story further, according to the Smithsonian. Keel’s book offers an investigation and interpretation of the reports; it is not proof of a supernatural explanation.
