The Most Memorable Apple Ads: Two Campaigns That Made the Case for Mac

Apple’s documented Real People and Get a Mac campaigns made the case for switching from a PC in sharply different ways: one through personal testimony, the other through comedy. They are memorable examples, not a measured ranking of Apple’s most popular ads. The available campaign material supports examining these two in detail, but not declaring a definitive all-time winner.

What makes an Apple ad memorable?

“Most memorable” is an editorial judgment unless it is backed by audience-recall data or another reliable public ranking. Here, the useful way to compare campaigns is by their central idea, tone, format, intended audience and the barrier to switching they addressed. On those grounds, Apple’s 2002 Real People campaign and its archived 2006 Get a Mac examples offer two distinct approaches.

Real People (2002): a switch told by the switcher

Apple announced Real People on June 10, 2002, as a television campaign of eight ads. Each featured a different person who had switched from a PC to a Macintosh. Apple described participants from varied backgrounds, including a Windows network administrator, writer, illustrator, small-business owner, programmer, interactive producer and DJ. Documentary filmmaker Errol Morris directed the campaign. Apple called it its largest campaign since Think Different launched in 1998. Apple’s launch announcement provides those details.

The creative idea was to make the pitch personal rather than abstract. Steve Jobs, then Apple’s CEO, put the format this way: “These are not actors—they’re real people who have switched from PCs to Macs, telling their story in their own words.” The testimonial structure gives the campaign a documentary-like premise: viewers hear individual accounts from people presented as fellow computer users, rather than a single narrator making the argument for everyone.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

That description is Apple’s account of the campaign and its participants; it does not independently verify each person’s story or establish how much the ads changed public opinion or sales. The count of eight refers to versions in Apple’s announcement, not a performance or audience statistic.

Get a Mac (2006): switching, staged as comic comparison

Apple’s archived Get a Mac campaign page describes the idea as “based on all the reasons to switch from a PC to a Mac.” Its preserved examples address Windows PC users through humor and direct comparison. A virus-themed item is dated July 20, 2006; a home-movie comparison, September 26, 2006; and a Microsoft Office item, November 12, 2006. The campaign archive retains the examples and their dates.

Where Real People framed switching through individual experiences, these Get a Mac pieces turned perceived switching barriers into comic contrasts. That gives the argument a more overtly promotional, comparison-based tone. The two campaigns share a subject—why a PC user might move to a Mac—but use different storytelling devices: testimony in one, staged humor in the other.

The virus claims and references to older software and hardware belong to historical advertising copy. They should not be treated as current security advice, a present-day comparison of products, or guidance about current versions of Windows, macOS or Microsoft Office.

How the two campaigns differ

Campaign Documented format Primary approach Audience or barrier addressed Historical context

Get a Mac (archived examples, 2006) Archived campaign pieces, including examples dated July 20, September 26 and November 12, 2006 Humorous, direct comparisons Windows PC users and perceived reasons not to switch, including virus concerns and familiar software or uses Apple’s archive preserves the examples; its historical claims do not describe current products or security

The table compares what Apple’s announcement and archive establish, not the campaigns’ relative cultural reach. Apple’s campaign index also preserves entries for Get a Mac, iPod Valentine’s Day materials and Mac Pro and MacBook Pro launches. An index confirms that Apple listed those campaigns; by itself, it does not establish their impact or provide a complete history. Apple’s campaign index is the source for those entries.

Are these Apple’s most famous ads?

These are two well-documented examples of Apple advertising, not a substantiated all-time top two. The available campaign sources do not provide a reliable audience ranking or comparable recall, sales-impact or popularity figures. Nor do they provide enough primary documentation here to profile other likely contenders—including “1984,” “Think Different,” the iPod silhouette ads or “Shot on iPhone”—to the same standard. A broader all-time shortlist would need campaign dates, creative credits and original executions across those examples, followed by an explicitly editorial selection rather than a claim of universal agreement.
