A reasoned shortlist starts with POW!, BAM!, and WHAM! for their instantly legible impact, then moves to character signatures such as Spider-Man’s THWIP and Nightcrawler’s BAMF. This is an editorial ranking, not the result of a poll: the effects stand out for recognizability, the actions or characters they evoke, and how lettering turns them into part of the image.
How to read this ranking
Comic sound effects are visual marks as well as sound words. Their lettering, size, placement, and relationship to the action help readers interpret a panel; the same word can feel different depending on how it is drawn and where it appears. The Sound of Comics project at San Diego State University distinguishes motion from impact: “The impact is the sound of the object hitting another object, such as ‘WHAM’ or ‘BAM.’” WHIZ and SLASH, by contrast, suggest movement.
The entries below are ranked by a blend of immediate recognizability, connection to a familiar character or action, and their place in popular comic imagery. There is no representative poll, comparative statistic, or corpus count establishing a definitive winner, so the order is editorial rather than a measured consensus.
1. POW!
POW! is the archetypal comic-book impact: short, emphatic, and easy to grasp at a glance. Its place in popular imagery is strengthened by the 1960s Batman television series, whose stylized fight cards made POW! part of a campy pop-art presentation. Smithsonian Magazine reports that the series premiered on January 12, 1966. That association is a cultural landmark, not evidence that the spelling is objectively the most common or popular effect in comics.

2. BAM! and WHAM!
BAM! and WHAM! are flexible impact words that read clearly across many kinds of collisions and blows. The Sound of Comics project uses both as examples of impact, contrasting them with effects that convey movement. Their strength is their directness: readers do not need a character-specific context to understand that something has hit something else.
3. BLAM!
BLAM! carries much of the same emphatic force as POW!, with an especially strong association with the Batman television fight cards. Smithsonian Magazine describes the show’s “POW!” and “BLAM!” graphics as part of its campy style. DC’s 2018 retrospective argues that the television series had a lasting influence on Batman comics, even as the main comics later moved away from its cheery campiness. That is DC’s characterization of the show’s legacy, rather than a measured account of its influence.

4. THWIP
Why do comics say THWIP? The word is closely associated with Spider-Man’s web action. Unlike a straightforward impact such as BAM!, THWIP signals what the webs are doing, making it useful as a character-linked sound as well as a cue to the action in a panel. The Sound of Comics project identifies it as a recognizable Spider-Man sound.
5. BAMF
BAMF is Nightcrawler’s signature teleportation sound. Its connection to one character and one distinctive action makes it easy to recognize even though it does not describe an ordinary impact. The Sound of Comics project notes that the association is strong enough for characters within the fiction sometimes to use “bamf” as a verb.

6. FNAP
FNAP is the quieter, more surprising entry. In Batman: The Killing Joke, the repeated effect accompanies the Joker placing a card. The Sound of Comics project’s analysis of the May 2008 collected edition, Batman: The Killing Joke #1HC-A, describes how the repetition contributes to characterization and creates a visual rhythm. Its memorability comes from narrative context rather than volume or a dramatic collision.
The cited example credits writer Alan Moore, artist and colorist Brian Bolland, and letterer Richard Starkings, with DC Comics as publisher. Reading the repeated FNAP in its panel sequence shows how a small, recurring mark can carry meaning beyond simply naming a sound.

Why comic books use sound effects
Comic lettering makes sound visible. A drawn WHAM can occupy space, point toward an impact, and become part of the composition; a THWIP can help communicate the action of a web even in a silent medium. As the Public Journal of Semiotics article “Four-Color Sound: A Peircean Semiotics of Comic Book Onomatopoeia” puts it, “Onomatopoeia are perhaps the best representative in popular culture of the comic book medium (aside from the famous superheroes and superheroines).” The effects are not merely captions for imaginary audio: they are graphic cues that guide attention and help give a panel its character.
