Spoilers for Marineford and Water Seven/Enies Lobby. There is no canonical answer to “What is the saddest death in One Piece?” The most affecting choice depends on what matters most: the bond left behind, the sacrifice, or the loss’s consequences. By those measures, Portgas D. Ace’s death is the most devastating human death in this selection; Edward Newgate (Whitebeard) gives Marineford its larger, generational tragedy; and the Going Merry’s farewell is the series’ most powerful symbolic death, though the ship is not a human character.
What makes a One Piece death heartbreaking?
This is an editorial comparison, not a ranking established by a poll or a canon list. The scenes below are weighed by four criteria: who is left grieving and how close they were, whether the loss involves sacrifice or unexpected harm, its immediate consequences for Luffy and the crew, and its wider significance to the story.
The selection is deliberately focused on three well-supported farewells: two human deaths at Marineford and the Going Merry’s loss after Enies Lobby. Robin’s request to live is included as an important contrast, not as a death.
1. Portgas D. Ace: the most devastating human death
What happens at Marineford
In the story, Luffy manages to rescue Ace, but Admiral Akainu strikes Ace as he protects Luffy. Ace dies in his brother’s arms after expressing gratitude to the people who loved him. The intimacy of that final exchange makes the scene more than a battlefield casualty: Luffy is present, but powerless to prevent the loss.

The official listing for manga Volume 59, titled “Portgas D. Ace Dies,” places the story in chapters 574–584 and is dated August 4, 2010: ONE PIECE.com’s Volume 59 listing. In the anime, the moment is covered by Episode 484, broadcast January 23, 2011; the official Episode 484 listing describes Ace’s death and Luffy weeping as Whitebeard’s crew and allies react. These are different formats and numbering systems: chapters are manga installments, while 484 is an anime episode.
Why it hurts
Ace’s death combines a sudden reversal with a close family bond. Luffy has reached him, so the rescue briefly seems complete; then the danger shifts from escape to a loss Luffy cannot undo. The immediate grief belongs to Luffy, but the scene also reverberates through the assembled allies. In this selection, that combination of personal closeness and helplessness makes Ace’s death the strongest answer to “Which One Piece death was the most heartbreaking?”

2. Whitebeard: a crew’s loss and the end of an era
A deliberate last stand
Whitebeard orders his people to retreat and remains behind. After Ace dies, he continues fighting. Blackbeard’s group attacks him, and Whitebeard dies after declaring that Roger’s lost treasure exists. Bandai Namco’s licensed Marineford recap summarizes this sequence.
Why his death matters beyond one relationship
Where Ace’s death is centered on the intimate bond between brothers, Whitebeard’s is also a collective loss: his crew is forced to leave him behind, and his stand gives their retreat time. His final declaration connects his death to the story’s wider pursuit of One Piece. That makes the scene feel like both a sacrifice for his people and a turning point in a world still shaped by the search he names.

3. Going Merry: the farewell that feels like a death
The ship’s final voyage
The Going Merry is not a human character, and its sinking should not be counted as a human death. But the crew’s farewell carries the emotional weight of losing a companion. In Bandai Namco’s licensed Water Seven recap, the badly damaged ship helps the Straw Hats escape Enies Lobby, then breaks down. The crew sets it alight as they say goodbye.
Why the farewell resonates
The Merry’s role in the escape gives the parting a final act of care: the ship helps bring the crew to safety, and the crew recognizes that it cannot go farther. The recap reproduces Merry’s fictional final words: “Thank you for taking such good care of me. I was very happy.” The loss is symbolic rather than human, but it is personal to a crew whose journey the ship has shared.

Robin’s request to live is not a death
Robin’s story at Water Seven and Enies Lobby is another major emotional moment, but it belongs in a different category. She survived Ohara’s destruction as a child, lived with mistrust, and eventually asked the Straw Hats to take her with them. The force of the scene comes from survival, belonging, and choosing to live—not from her death. Bandai Namco’s Water Seven recap recounts this context.
How the three farewells compare
| Farewell | Who bears the loss | What gives it weight |
|---|---|---|
| Ace | Luffy, his brother, and the allies gathered at Marineford | Ace protects Luffy; the rescue turns into a sudden, intimate loss. |
| Whitebeard | His crew and the wider story world | He stays behind so his people can retreat, then dies after a declaration that keeps the search for One Piece alive. |
| Going Merry | The Straw Hat crew | The ship helps the crew escape Enies Lobby before its final breakdown and farewell; this is a symbolic loss, not a human death. |
The comparison is about different kinds of heartbreak, not a measured ranking. Ace is the clearest choice for a personal tragedy; Whitebeard’s death broadens the loss to a crew and an era; the Merry’s farewell shows how a nonhuman companion can carry emotional significance without being a human character.
