What are Michael Jackson fans called?
“Moonwalkers” is widely used for Michael Jackson fans, and the term draws on the moonwalk, his signature dance move. A fan-maintained encyclopedia describes it as a widely recognized label, but that does not make it an official name accepted by everyone. The Michael Jackson Wiki’s Moonwalker entry reflects common fan language, not a formal designation binding the whole fanbase.

Why some fans use other names
Fan identity is personal as well as collective. In a MJJCommunity discussion about what fans call themselves, participants propose “Soldiers of Love,” describe fans as a family, or prefer “Michael Jackson fans.” The thread documents differing views in that forum; it is neither a representative vote nor evidence of Jackson’s formal preference.
How fans keep the community active
There is no single way to be a Moonwalker. Fan-created activity documented in community sources includes discussion, dance, art, cosplay, social campaigns, collecting and tribute-making. A fan-maintained encyclopedia describes several forms of tribute, while the MJJCommunity forum provides spaces for ongoing discussion. These examples show the range of participation; they do not measure how common each activity is among fans worldwide.

Fans also create and maintain reference material about Jackson and his work. The Michael Jackson Wiki is one example of a fan-created knowledge project. Such efforts preserve information and interpretation, but, like forums, fan wikis represent their contributors rather than every listener.
Collecting and keeping the music in circulation
For some fans, collecting is another way to engage with the catalog. The US official Michael Jackson Store listing for the “Michael: Songs From the Motion Picture” CD identifies a 13-track physical soundtrack album released April 24, 2026. A separate official listing for the 2LP edition documents the vinyl format. These listings establish the editions offered by the official store, not their availability through other retailers or in every region.

Fan communities existed before social media
Organized fan activity predates today’s social platforms. MJJ Archives says its club began in 1992, had international members and published a quarterly magazine. MJWN says its fan club began in March 1998 and describes volunteer activity. These organization histories illustrate ways fans sustained connection through clubs and print; neither organization speaks for the whole fandom.
Forums and fan projects extend those forms of participation into online spaces. The medium has changed, but the examples show that fan community can be built through recurring discussion, shared reference work and creative activity—not only through a label or a central organization.

How large is the Moonwalker community?
No authoritative worldwide count of Michael Jackson fans is established here. Online counters describe activity on particular websites, not the number of Moonwalkers. For example, when accessed on October 8, 2026, the Michael Jackson Wiki displayed 1,307 articles, 78,715 total edits and 42 active editors. A search result captured that same date showed MJJCommunity with 65,594 threads, 3,187,920 messages and 103,019 members. Those platform-specific counters are volatile and should not be treated as a census of fans.
More useful than a single number is recognizing the variety within the culture: fans may identify with different labels, participate through different media, or engage individually rather than through an organization. The available examples demonstrate that variety without measuring its distribution.
