Was Lady Gaga’s meat dress really sold as a Halloween costume?
In October 2010, CBS New York reported that Old Homestead Steakhouse offered a Lady Gaga-inspired costume made with 112 pounds of raw meat for $100,000. The steakhouse’s co-owner Marc Sherry said, “We are ‘meating’ a demand for the most sought after costume of Halloween 2010,” as quoted by CBS.
The report establishes that the costume was offered at that price; it does not establish that a buyer completed the purchase. The offer is also distinct from Gaga’s meat dress: it was a steakhouse’s Halloween costume creation inspired by her look.

Why the old costume price lists do not prove an all-time record
ABC News’s 2011 roundup is a snapshot of unusually expensive costume listings from that period, including licensed outfits and custom creations. A listing price shows what a seller asked, not necessarily what a buyer paid. Those figures also say nothing about present-day availability or prices.
Other seasonal Halloween price examples do not belong in a costume ranking. TIME reported a $299 price for a Home Depot 12-foot skeleton and a $180 Target jack-o’-lantern in 2023; both are decorations, not costumes. Their prices illustrate attention around high-priced Halloween goods, but they cannot be compared with costume estimates or listings.

Are movie costumes part of the same record?
Not on the evidence available here. A movie costume’s production cost is a different category from a costume sold or offered for Halloween. Guinness World Records identifies Edith Head’s fur-trimmed sequined showgirl ensemble for Ginger Rogers in Lady in the Dark (1944)—a mink bolero, bodysuit and overskirt—as the most credible candidate for the most costly movie costume, while warning that certainty is difficult. Guinness explains: “Hollywood studios are famously secretive about the accounting of production costs, which makes it difficult to know the identity of the holder for this title with certainty.”
How to recreate one of these looks without treating it as the original
A conventional adult costume or separate components can provide a practical starting point for a Halloween interpretation of an elaborate look. A purchased outfit is not equivalent to Klum’s bespoke production, the steakhouse’s meat creation or any of the historical listings above.
