The World War II film in Netflix’s 2026 release announcement is The Mosquito Bowl, directed by Peter Berg—not a Brad Pitt movie. Netflix lists the film for streaming on November 25, 2026, after select theatrical dates beginning October 30. Brad Pitt’s separate Netflix film, The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth, is set in 1977 and is scheduled for December 23.
When is The Mosquito Bowl coming to Netflix?
Netflix has announced November 25, 2026, as the film’s Netflix release date, with select theatrical dates beginning October 30, 2026. The announcement does not specify availability by country, so the date should not be taken as a guarantee that the film will appear in every regional Netflix library on that day. Netflix Tudum’s announcement has the schedule and project details.

Is The Mosquito Bowl based on a true story?
Yes. Netflix describes it as a true-story-based film adapted from Buzz Bissinger’s 2022 nonfiction book, The Mosquito Bowl: A Game of Life and Death in World War II. The story follows four college football players who put their athletic careers aside to enlist in the Marines after the attack on Pearl Harbor: John McLaughry, Bob Baumann, Tony Butkovich, and Dave Schreiner. The book recounts their wartime service and a notable football game before the Battle of Okinawa.
The film brings together college football, young men’s ambitions, military service, and the human cost of war. Berg told Netflix that it is “very much a reality-based film” and described his interest in “love and compassion and human connection” amid traumatic environments. The adaptation is directed and produced by Berg. Brian Grazer produces for Imagine Entertainment, with Alex Gayner also producing; Ezra Emanuel, Bissinger, and Jeb Brody are executive producers.

Who stars in The Mosquito Bowl?
| Actor | Character |
|---|---|
| Nicholas Galitzine | John McLaughry |
| Bill Skarsgård | Bob Baumann |
| Ray Nicholson | Tony Butkovich |
| Tom Francis | Dave Schreiner |
Netflix’s announcement names these four leads. Brad Pitt is not among the cast named for The Mosquito Bowl.
Why is the Brad Pitt headline misleading?
Netflix announced two different films. The Mosquito Bowl is Peter Berg’s World War II story, with an announced Netflix date of November 25, 2026. The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth stars Brad Pitt, but it is set in 1977, eight years after Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, and is not a World War II film. Netflix announced an IMAX release beginning November 25, 2026, followed by its Netflix release on December 23. Details are in Netflix Tudum’s announcement of the Cliff Booth film.
The mistaken association may also come from Fury, Pitt’s earlier World War II film. A report said it was scheduled to leave Netflix on May 1, 2026, but that date has passed and does not establish whether it is currently available.

Netflix says filming took place in Australia, including Queensland and northern New South Wales. The locations stand in for Marine training grounds and the Pacific theater. Berg called Queensland “cinematic gold” for bringing the story to life.
