Who was the Monster of Florence? The identity of the person—or people—responsible for all the murders attributed to the case has not been conclusively established. Investigators linked eight double murders in and around Florence, Italy, from 1968 to 1985. Courts convicted Mario Vanni and Giancarlo Lotti for a subset of those killings, while Pietro Pacciani’s case ended without a final retrial verdict. The legal outcomes do not establish one person’s responsibility for all 16 deaths.
What happened in the Monster of Florence case?
The name “Monster of Florence” refers to eight double murders attributed to a series around Florence between 1968 and 1985. The victims were couples attacked in secluded locations. The first victims linked to the case were Barbara Locci and Antonio Lo Bianco, shot near Signa in August 1968. The final attributed victims were French campers Nadine Mauriot and Jean-Michel Kraveichvili, killed in 1985.
Reporting on the case describes a recurring pattern and links the shootings to a .22-caliber Beretta and Winchester “series H” ammunition. Some women’s bodies were mutilated. These details formed part of the reported investigative linkage; a repeated pattern or weapon connection is not, by itself, proof that one identified person committed every murder.
Was the Monster of Florence ever caught?
There is no single final verdict identifying someone as responsible for all 16 deaths. The investigation and trials produced findings about particular defendants and killings, but those outcomes did not resolve the identity question for the entire series.

Pietro Pacciani
A Florence court convicted Pacciani at first instance in 1994 for killings within the series. An appellate court acquitted him in 1996, but Italy’s Supreme Court of Cassation annulled that acquittal and ordered a new appeal proceeding. Pacciani died in 1998 before it could take place. It is therefore incomplete to describe him simply as either convicted or acquitted without explaining the procedural sequence.
Mario Vanni and Giancarlo Lotti
Vanni and Lotti were convicted for a subset of the murders, not all eight double killings. Their convictions concern particular incidents; they do not amount to a court finding that either man was responsible for all 16 victims.

What was the Sardinian trail?
Early investigators focused on men of Sardinian origin connected to Barbara Locci. This line of inquiry became known as the Sardinian trail. It is an investigative avenue and theory, not an established answer to the whole case. Netflix’s official synopsis says its drama focuses on this trail, but a series’ choice of narrative focus is not evidence that the theory was proved.
What remains uncertain about the case?
The key distinction is between the murders linked by investigators, the courts’ decisions about individual defendants and incidents, and explanations that go beyond those findings. The available case account does not establish one person as conclusively responsible for all eight pairs of victims. Nor does it establish occult, secret-society, or conspiracy explanations as findings.

When assessing any proposed explanation, ask which specific murders it accounts for, whether it rests on a court finding or on an investigative hypothesis, witness account, or later interpretation, how it addresses the reported weapon and ammunition link, and what remains unproven. A theory’s prominence in a documentary or drama does not change its evidentiary status.
How does the Netflix series treat the story?
The Netflix drama uses the Sardinian trail as its investigative focus. Speaking to TIME about the series, director Stefano Sollima said, “We wanted to tell the story of the Monster without taking a position.” TIME also quoted him saying, “There was not a single perpetrator who has been sentenced for all 16 murders.” These are the director’s descriptions of the adaptation and the court record, not a substitute for judicial findings. Dramatized dialogue and scenes should not be treated as verified transcripts or court records.

The publisher-hosted excerpt confirms the book and its authors; it is further reading, not an official case file or a neutral replacement for judicial records.
