The Miranda Chronicles: Daughters of Independence is a Platinum Jubilee commemorative volume about Miranda House, the University of Delhi women’s college established in 1948. Edited by Devjani Ray and published by Har Anand, it brings together personal accounts and photographs from Mirandians across generations rather than presenting itself as a single-author academic history.

What is The Miranda Chronicles?

The full title is The Miranda Chronicles: Daughters of Independence. Miranda House identifies it as its 75th-year Platinum Jubilee Commemorative Volume. The college’s announcement says that more than seventy-five former students, teachers, and staff contribute stories and rare photographs. A bookseller record identifies the 2024 edition as a 519-page, English-language hardback, ISBN 9788119798476.

The book’s multi-voice approach makes lived experience central: memories and anecdotes sit alongside photographs and, at times, official records. It is best understood as a commemorative collection shaped by people connected to the college, not as a claim that every account is archival or independently documented. Miranda House’s announcement names Devjani Ray as editor and Har Anand as publisher.

Why does Miranda House’s history matter to the volume?

Miranda House was established on March 7, 1948, shortly after India’s independence. Its 2022 self-study report says the first cohort numbered 122 young women. Those dates and figures give the subtitle, Daughters of Independence, a clear historical setting: the college’s life began in the early years of a newly independent country.

The same report records 5,829 students, 200 faculty members, and 18 departments at the time it was prepared. These are 2022 report-era figures, not current counts. The report also says the college held the number-one position in the NIRF college category for six consecutive years, 2017–2022; that is a dated institutional claim, not a statement about today’s ranking. The college’s institutional history and self-study materials provide this context.

What kind of history does it tell?

Rather than treating a college as only buildings, dates, or institutional milestones, a collection of personal stories can show how a place is remembered by the people who studied and worked there. The volume’s contributors span generations, so its organizing perspective is human and collective: recollections and photographs are part of how the institution’s past is represented.

The available description establishes the volume’s contributors and broad source material, but not a chapter-by-chapter account. It would therefore be misleading to assign it specific themes or claim that every story documents a particular social or political change. Its historical value, as described by the college, lies in preserving multiple voices alongside rare images and occasional official records.
