Spoilers for the entire film follow.
Margot survives The Menu because she stops treating Hawthorn’s dinner as an art performance and asks Chef Julian Slowik for something he once genuinely loved making: a simple cheeseburger. Her request is not a magic password, and Slowik does not spare her because she is morally pure. She survives because she recognizes the human being beneath his performance, speaks honestly about what she wants, and gives him a way to cook for pleasure rather than for punishment.
That is why the final cheeseburger matters so much. It interrupts Slowik’s carefully written script—and briefly brings him back to the cook he used to be.
What happens at the end of The Menu?
By the final act, it is clear that Hawthorn’s tasting menu has been designed as a lethal performance. Slowik has arranged the evening around the diners’ failures, hypocrisies, and entitlement. The food is no longer primarily meant to nourish anyone. Each course is a lecture, a judgment, or part of the larger plan to destroy the restaurant and everyone inside it.

Margot—whose identity is later connected to the name Erin—has never fully belonged to Tyler’s carefully curated foodie fantasy. She is skeptical of the diners’ reverence for Slowik and is more interested in what is actually happening than in appearing knowledgeable about fine dining. When she realizes that the meal is unsatisfying in the most basic sense, she challenges the premise of the evening.
She asks Slowik for a cheeseburger with American cheese, cooked medium.
The request genuinely stops him. In Slowik’s office, Margot has seen an old photograph of him happily cooking burgers during an earlier, less prestigious stage of his career. The photograph suggests a time when cooking gave him immediate satisfaction: a customer wanted food, and he made something enjoyable. Margot connects that memory to the person standing in front of her.
Slowik makes the burger himself. He appears to take real pleasure in preparing it, unlike the later courses, which have been presented as elaborate demonstrations of control. Margot takes a bite, says it is good, and asks whether she can take the rest with her.

She leaves Hawthorn by boat and watches as the restaurant burns. While eating the cheeseburger, she wipes her mouth with the printed menu. The grand document that governed the evening has become a disposable napkin.
Why does the cheeseburger save Margot?
The burger works because it breaks the rules of Slowik’s performance. Hawthorn’s guests have accepted that the chef controls everything: the courses, the pace, the interpretation, and eventually the meaning of their deaths. Margot rejects that arrangement by making a direct customer request.
She is not asking Slowik to explain a dish or praise his genius. She is asking for food she actually wants to eat. That distinction matters. Slowik’s final menu depends on the diners remaining spectators and participants in his artistic statement. Margot turns the situation back into a restaurant transaction: a customer is hungry, and a cook can choose to make her a meal.
The request also offers Slowik an escape from his own role. He has spent the night acting as an artist, judge, executioner, and victim of the culinary world he believes corrupted him. The cheeseburger allows him, briefly, to be a cook again.
The burger is the opposite of Hawthorn’s status theater
At Hawthorn, food has become a form of social proof. Tyler photographs the courses and wants proximity to culinary genius. The diners treat the restaurant’s exclusivity, price, and vocabulary as evidence of their own sophistication. The meal is valuable partly because it demonstrates that they can access and understand something unavailable to ordinary people.

A cheeseburger has none of that status anxiety. It is familiar, filling, and immediately legible. It does not require a lecture about its concept before someone can enjoy it. Margot’s request brings food back to its most basic purpose: someone is hungry, and another person makes something satisfying.
This does not mean The Menu argues that ambitious or conceptual cooking is inherently worthless. The film’s satire is aimed at the pretension, exploitation, and entitlement that can surround fine dining—not at creativity itself. The problem is what happens when cooking becomes so self-conscious that the chef no longer seems to be feeding people.
Why the details matter
- American cheese: Margot asks for an accessible, familiar version of the food rather than a rarefied reinterpretation.
- Medium: She gives a practical order, not a symbolic speech. She knows what she wants and communicates it plainly.
- Made by Slowik: The chef is not merely permitting an exception. He personally returns to a kind of cooking associated with his earlier happiness.
- To go: Margot asks to take the burger with her, puncturing the idea that she must remain inside Slowik’s ritual until its prescribed conclusion.
What does the old burger photograph mean?
The photograph is the clearest visual link between Slowik’s past and Margot’s escape. It shows him cooking burgers before he became the self-conscious, domineering chef at the center of Hawthorn. The film does not provide a detailed biography explaining exactly when or why his relationship with cooking changed. Instead, it gives us a contrast.
In the photograph, cooking appears connected to happiness and direct human exchange. In Hawthorn’s kitchen, it has become a system of discipline and spectacle. Slowik’s staff obey him absolutely, his diners are trapped in a theatrical menu, and every plate carries an accusation. The old image reminds Margot—and the audience—that the chef’s rage has not erased the part of him that once enjoyed making food for people.
Margot does not flatter that part of him by calling him a genius. She reaches it by asking him to make the food he used to make with uncomplicated pleasure. The film leaves the emotional connection partly unstated, but the juxtaposition between the photograph and the burger strongly supports this interpretation.
Why Margot is different from Tyler
Tyler appears to understand Slowik’s cuisine, but his knowledge is mostly a form of self-display. He wants access to the chef’s process and is thrilled by the exclusivity of the experience even after he realizes that the guests are going to die. His fascination with Slowik’s genius is stronger than his concern for the people around him—including Margot.
Margot does the opposite. She does not attempt to prove that she belongs in the world of elite food. She notices that the menu is failing to satisfy her and says so. Her honesty makes her an outsider to Tyler’s fantasy, but it also gives her an advantage: she can see the gap between Slowik’s identity as a celebrity chef and the ordinary pleasure that originally drew him to cooking.
This is why the cheeseburger is not a magical loophole available to anyone who happens to order one. Margot survives because she understands what the request means in that particular moment. She identifies a genuine desire beneath Slowik’s elaborate performance and responds to it directly.
Why does Slowik kill the other diners?
Slowik’s targets are not simply “rich people,” even though wealth and privilege are central to the film’s criticism. The diners represent different forms of entitlement and different ways of consuming art, labor, and other people.

- Tyler fetishizes expertise and wants to be close to genius, but neglects ordinary human responsibility.
- The finance workers treat service employees as disposable while assuming that money excuses their behavior.
- The food critic possesses professional power over chefs and can influence their livelihoods through judgment.
- The regular diners take Hawthorn’s labor and access for granted, behaving as though returning customers deserve special treatment.
- The actor expects his celebrity to entitle him to exceptions and personal accommodation.
The film’s broader target is entitlement: the assumption that money, status, knowledge, or cultural taste gives someone ownership over other people’s work. The writers have also described the film as a satire of both the absurdity and the genuine magic of fine dining. Its argument is not that guests should never expect quality. It is that they should approach service workers and creative labor with respect rather than treating them as instruments for personal status.
Slowik is not vindicated by the film
Slowik’s critique of his customers contains recognizable truths, but that does not make his response just. He imprisons the diners and staff, manipulates them, turns their vulnerabilities into entertainment, and stages mass murder as an artistic finale. He condemns people for turning food into status theater while doing something similar himself on a more violent scale.

Slowik claims to despise the transformation of cooking into performance, yet he makes destruction into his largest performance of all.
The ending therefore does not say that Slowik has found moral clarity. It shows that his identity as a chef is still divided. He wants to punish the people who corrupted the culture around food, but he also wants the control, admiration, and authorship that come with staging an unforgettable final work. Margot escapes in part because she refuses to accept that his artistic premise must govern her behavior.
Is Margot really Erin?
Margot arrives under an assumed identity connected to the escort Tyler hired, while the film later identifies her as Erin. This reveal is important, but it is not primarily a secret-identity puzzle. It establishes that Tyler brought someone who does not belong to the world he has curated for himself.
Erin is observant, practical, and skeptical. She is not invested in performing expertise for Slowik or the other diners. Those qualities help her recognize that the old photograph matters and that the chef’s desire to cook has been buried beneath his elaborate identity.
Her survival is therefore not a reward for being innocent in every respect. It comes from her ability to stay responsive to reality while everyone else remains committed to the roles they have chosen: foodie, critic, celebrity, regular, financier, or genius chef.
What does asking for the burger “to go” mean?
The phrase “to go” may be the film’s sharpest practical joke. Margot has just escaped a restaurant where every course was treated as a carefully controlled artistic event. Instead of respectfully completing the ritual, she asks for leftovers.
That request reduces Slowik’s grand creation to an ordinary customer-service interaction. She is not asking permission to remain part of the experience. She wants food for later and wants to leave. Slowik can grant that request without having to explain or defend his entire philosophy.

It also reverses the relationship between chef and diner. Throughout the evening, Slowik has dictated what the guests will consume and how they will interpret it. With the burger, Margot chooses the food, chooses how much to eat, and chooses where the meal will end.

The final bite has more than one possible meaning. On the most immediate level, Margot has spent the evening eating tiny, abstract courses and has finally obtained something comforting and substantial. Her enjoyment is a relief after the horror of the dinner.
It is also a dark joke. Hawthorn’s elaborate culinary world is burning behind her, yet Margot pauses to enjoy the burger. Pleasure has survived Slowik’s attempt to turn food into death. The most emotionally successful dish of the night is the least prestigious one.
The scene does not require a single official decoding. The burger can represent comfort, lost joy, honest appetite, rebellion against status, or all of these at once. What is clear is that Margot’s final relationship to food is direct and personal. She eats because she wants to eat, not because the dish proves anything about her taste or social position.
The menu as a napkin
When Margot wipes her mouth with the printed menu, she completes the film’s reversal. The menu had functioned as a rulebook and a piece of cultural authority. It told the diners what each course meant and kept them inside Slowik’s system of interpretation. In the final image, she treats it as disposable.

She has not merely escaped the building. She has escaped the obligation to regard the menu as sacred. A document that was supposed to define the evening becomes useful for a completely ordinary purpose.
How much of this interpretation is confirmed?
The film and its creators support the central points, but they do not assign one exclusive symbolic meaning to the cheeseburger.
It is confirmed that Margot is intended to outwit Slowik rather than survive through an accidental loophole. Director Mark Mylod has described her escape as rooted in intuition and empathy. The screenplay makes Slowik pause at the word “cheeseburger,” establishes his earlier connection to burger cooking through the photograph, and shows him preparing the food with visible pleasure.
The thematic conclusions are interpretations built from those details. It is reasonable to read the burger as a symbol of ordinary pleasure and Slowik’s lost relationship with cooking. It would be too strong to claim that the filmmakers gave it one definitive meaning, or that Slowik forgives Margot because she is uniquely morally pure.

Likewise, The Menu is not based on a true story. The writers have discussed an island-restaurant experience as inspiration for the premise, but Hawthorn and its lethal dinner are fictional.
Why the food looks so convincing
The film’s food was developed with chef Dominique Crenn and her team, whose work is associated with highly conceptual, narrative-driven fine dining. Culinary consultants helped devise the dishes and trained the production’s performers and kitchen staff in preparation, plating, knife work, and restaurant choreography.
That attention to detail strengthens the satire. Hawthorn’s food has to look genuinely impressive for the diners’ obsession with it to feel credible. At the same time, the cheeseburger had to look immediately appetizing rather than precious or abstract. Its visual familiarity makes the contrast with the tasting menu register before the characters explain it.
The ending in one sentence
Margot escapes because she refuses to play Slowik’s game: by asking for the simple food he once loved making, she replaces his lethal artistic ritual with an honest act of cooking, and he briefly chooses to be a chef instead of an executioner.

Why does Margot survive in The Menu?
Margot survives because she outwits Slowik by rejecting the tasting-menu performance and asking for a cheeseburger with American cheese, cooked medium. The request recalls an earlier, happier period of Slowik’s life and gives him a chance to cook for pleasure rather than punishment.
What does the cheeseburger symbolize in The Menu?
The cheeseburger symbolizes ordinary pleasure, honest appetite, and Slowik’s lost connection to cooking. It is the opposite of Hawthorn’s status-driven, highly conceptual tasting menu. The film supports several connected meanings rather than one officially declared interpretation.
Why does Margot ask to take the cheeseburger to go?
Margot asks to take the burger with her because she refuses to remain inside Slowik’s ritual. Treating his carefully staged final course as ordinary takeout turns the chef’s system of control into a normal customer-service exchange.
Is Margot really Erin in The Menu?
Yes. The film later identifies Margot as Erin, the woman Tyler hired under an assumed identity. The reveal mainly establishes her as an outsider to Tyler’s foodie fantasy, not as the solution to a conventional mystery.
