Why did Rachel Zegler’s casting draw backlash?
Racist and culture-war criticism
Zegler’s casting prompted racist backlash as well as broader culture-war criticism. These objections were directed at the casting itself and should not be conflated with criticism of the film’s choices or of Zegler’s public remarks.
Her comments about the 1937 original
Zegler also described the original animated film as dated and its romance as troubling. Some fans objected to those remarks, which became a separate point of contention from the backlash against her casting.

Why are the dwarfs CGI in the remake?
The dwarfs debate concerned both representation and work opportunities. Actor Peter Dinklage criticized retaining the seven-dwarfs premise. Disney said it had consulted members of the dwarfism community, and the final characters were created with CGI.
That approach did not resolve the disagreement. Some performers with dwarfism argued that using CGI removed roles they might otherwise have been able to play. The dispute therefore involved competing concerns: how to handle a fantasy premise associated with dwarfism, and whether the production’s choices excluded performers with dwarfism from employment.

How did the stars’ political views figure into the controversy?
Zegler publicly supported Palestinians, while Gadot spoke in support of Israel. Their differing public positions heightened scrutiny around the film, but that context is not proof that the statements caused audience behavior or determined the film’s commercial performance.

The Associated Press reported an opening of $43 million domestically and $87.3 million worldwide. ABC News Australia later reported a worldwide gross of $205.6 million. The first pair describes the launch; the latter is a later total. Those figures document different stages of the release, but by themselves they cannot show how much, if at all, any one controversy affected attendance.
