What did Linda Napolitano say happened?
Napolitano’s account centers on an alleged incident in the early hours of November 30, 1989. As TIME described her claim in 2024, three beings took her from her 12th-floor Lower Manhattan apartment, carried her through the sky to a craft, and later returned her to her bedroom. These details are her reported account, not independently established events.
Napolitano brought the story to Budd Hopkins, a UFO researcher known for investigating alleged abductions using hypnotic regression. Hopkins investigated the case and became its most prominent advocate. His book, Witnessed: The True Story of the Brooklyn Bridge Abduction, presents the case from his perspective. It is a record of the investigator’s account, not independent confirmation of what occurred.
Why did Hopkins consider the case unusually strong?
Hopkins argued that the case stood out because people other than Napolitano supposedly saw her outside the building. He described it as the strongest case he had worked on and said witnesses had told him they saw the episode. In a PBS/NOVA interview, he said, “I think the evidence is just again and again totally persuasive.” That is Hopkins’s conclusion, not a finding by PBS or an independent verification of the alleged event.

TIME reported in 2024 that Hopkins’s account involved 23 alleged witnesses. That figure is a claim attributed to him, not a verified witness count. TIME also reported that the identities of the alleged witnesses had not been verified. In particular, two people identified as security officers, “Richard” and “Dan,” reportedly communicated with Hopkins by letter; TIME said there was no concrete evidence that they existed. That reported gap does not establish that every alleged witness was fictitious, but it makes the count difficult to assess.
What was challenged about the witness evidence?
The key question is not only how many people were said to have seen something, but whether their accounts can be checked independently. In evaluating the claim, the important distinctions are whether a witness is identifiable, whether their account comes directly from them or through Hopkins, and whether it is corroborated independently of the investigator and other witnesses. The sources available here do not establish an independently verified group of 23 witnesses whose accounts can be compared on those terms.

In January 1993, Joseph J. Stefula, Richard D. Butler and George P. Hansen published “A Critique of Budd Hopkins’ Case of the UFO Abduction of Linda Napolitano” in the MUFON New Jersey Chronicle. The authors raised questions about the way the case had been documented and about similarities between aspects of the story and a science-fiction novel. They wrote: “To date, Hopkins has provided no full, detailed written report.” This was their assessment of the documentation available to them in 1993, not a ruling that accounts or documents could never have appeared later.
The contemporary critique and TIME’s later reporting point to a central evidentiary difficulty: the public account rests heavily on claims conveyed or endorsed by Hopkins, while the identities and independent accounts of key witnesses remain contested. That makes it hard to test how consistent the accounts were or whether they support one another without relying on the same source.

What did the alleged UN connection establish?
TIME reported that Javier Pérez de Cuéllar, then Secretary-General of the United Nations, was alleged to have had a connection to the episode. TIME quoted his denial: “I cannot but strongly deny the claim that I have had an abduction experience at any time.” He also expressed hope that his statement would end what he called “these unfounded rumours.” This denial addresses the alleged connection attributed to him; it does not, by itself, establish what Napolitano experienced.
How did the case become a documentary story?
The dispute has persisted across several decades. The 1993 critique challenged Hopkins’s handling and documentation; the later debate also included criticism from Carol Rainey, a former Hopkins collaborator. TIME’s 2024 account discusses Rainey’s challenge to the case. The fact that a claim has critics and defenders is not itself proof for either interpretation; the substance and independence of the evidence matter.

Netflix released the three-part series The Manhattan Alien Abduction in 2024. Netflix Tudum says the series features Napolitano and examines the widespread skepticism, while Netflix’s official listing frames the central question as whether the case was a hoax or proof of alien life. The series revisits the dispute; its documentary format does not independently verify the 1989 allegation. Availability of the listing may vary by territory and change over time.

The sources establish that Napolitano made the claim, Hopkins investigated and endorsed it, critics questioned the evidence and documentation, and the case remains a subject of public debate. They do not independently establish extraterrestrial involvement. At the same time, the material reviewed here does not conclusively prove that every part of the story was fabricated. The most supportable description is an unresolved allegation with contested witness evidence.
