Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallIf Owncast’s YouTube stream shows offline after an Ubuntu restart, first determine which part is offline: the Owncast website, the incoming broadcast to Owncast, or a separate output to YouTube. These are distinct checks. Restarting Owncast can bring its server process back, but it does not prove that an encoder has reconnected or that a YouTube publishing path is active.
First, identify what “offline” means
Check the Owncast website/player and YouTube Live Control Room separately, then identify whether Owncast runs as a native systemd service or in Docker. Owncast’s web interface and RTMP ingest use different ports: its manual installation documentation identifies port 8080 for the web interface and port 1935 for RTMP ingest (Owncast manual installation). A loaded webpage alone does not confirm that video is reaching Owncast.
- Owncast website does not load: start with the server’s service or container status and startup logs.
- Website loads but its player is offline: check whether the broadcaster is publishing to Owncast and whether the RTMP connection reaches it.
- Owncast receives video but YouTube is offline: investigate the separate YouTube output path and its credentials.
Fix a native systemd installation
Check this boot’s service status and logs
On Ubuntu, run:
sudo systemctl status owncast
sudo journalctl -u owncast -b --no-pager
The status command shows the unit’s current state; the journal command shows its logs from the current boot. Look for a missing executable, permission errors, a wrong working directory, or repeated exits. Owncast documents these systemd checks and also recommends following the service log with journalctl -u owncast -f while diagnosing a live issue (Owncast system service installation).
Enable the service at boot if needed
If the unit exists but is disabled, Owncast’s documented setup enables and starts it with:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl enable --now owncast
If the unit is missing, compare it with Owncast’s example service file rather than copying sample paths blindly. Its example uses After=network.target, Restart=always, RestartSec=5, and WantedBy=multi-user.target. Adapt WorkingDirectory, ExecStart, User, and Group for your installation. The working directory should contain the Owncast binary and data/; the dedicated service user needs permission to run the binary and write to the data directory. If you use the optional ProtectSystem=strict hardening, include the data location in ReadWritePaths so Owncast can write there (Owncast system service installation).
A restart policy helps systemd restart a failed service, but it cannot by itself make an external encoder reconnect or restore a separate YouTube output.

Confirm the incoming broadcast reaches Owncast
Once the service is active, inspect the encoder or broadcaster that sends video to Owncast. It must publish to Owncast’s /live RTMP endpoint using the Owncast stream key. Check that port 1935 is reachable through the Ubuntu host firewall and any cloud firewall or security rules. Port 8080 is for the web interface, not RTMP ingest (Owncast manual installation).
- Start or reconnect the encoder while watching Owncast’s logs with
sudo journalctl -u owncast -f. - If no publishing attempt appears in the logs, check whether the encoder is running and whether its destination and network route point to this Owncast server.
- If the logs show a rejected key, compare the encoder’s key with the key configured in Owncast and update the incorrect value.
- If the connection starts and then drops, inspect the encoder’s connection state and whether RTMP traffic can pass through the firewall and any upstream network rules.
Do not include stream keys in logs, screenshots, or public support posts.

Check YouTube as a separate publishing path
If Owncast is receiving video but YouTube Live Control Room says offline, find out how this setup sends video onward. It might use a second encoder output, a relay, or another service; the Owncast installation guidance for receiving a broadcast does not establish which topology you use. Check the relevant output configuration and YouTube Live Control Room rather than assuming that Owncast’s status controls YouTube.
YouTube has its own stream settings and key. If you reset the YouTube key in Live Control Room, enter the newly generated key in the encoder or other component that publishes to YouTube; an Owncast ingest key is not a substitute (YouTube Help: stream settings). Avoid sharing either service’s key when asking for help.

Use the container checks for a Docker installation
If Owncast runs in Docker, systemctl status owncast may not describe the separately managed container. Check the container or Compose workflow you actually use, including its logs, restart policy, and persistent data mount. Owncast documents --restart unless-stopped for a docker run setup and persistent storage; its Compose workflow uses docker compose up -d (Owncast installation documentation).
Confirm that the container is configured to start after a host restart and that its data volume remains mounted. Use the container’s status and logs to see whether it started successfully and whether it can access its data. Do not apply the native systemd unit as though it manages a Docker container.

Troubleshooting by symptom
| What you see | Next check | What it may indicate |
|---|---|---|
| Owncast website does not load after reboot | Check systemd or container status, startup logs, working directory, and file permissions. | The server may not be running or may be unable to access its installation or data. |
| Website loads, but Owncast’s player is offline | Check the encoder, the Owncast /live destination and key, and RTMP reachability on port 1935. |
The web service is reachable, but a live incoming feed has not been confirmed. |
| Owncast receives video, but YouTube says offline | Identify the YouTube output topology; check its destination, YouTube Live Control Room, and current YouTube key. | Owncast ingest and YouTube publishing are separate configuration paths. |
| Native service starts and then exits or repeatedly restarts | Read the current-boot journal; verify the executable path, service user and group, data permissions, and any systemd hardening. | The unit’s restart policy may keep trying, while a configuration or access problem prevents a lasting start. |
| Docker deployment stays down after a host restart | Check the container restart policy, Compose startup, persistent data mount, and container logs. | The container may not be configured to restart or may not have access to its persistent data. |
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube channel that needs to loop uploaded recordings continuously, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. It plays uploaded videos rather than streaming from a camera, and streams to YouTube only. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
