There is no verified, current, platform-specific list of 40 lowest-rated anime in the available evidence, so a definitive “40 ranked” list would be misleading. What can be said is narrower: a 2026 report names several low-scoring MyAnimeList titles, while an IMDb user-curated list shows different examples. Those results are not a single cross-platform ranking.
Why “lowest-rated anime” depends on the platform
An anime’s place at the bottom of a rating list depends on which platform supplies the score, what titles qualify, and whether the list applies a minimum vote threshold. IMDb and MyAnimeList ratings should not be combined into one ordered list: their displayed scores come from separate systems, and the available examples do not establish a common eligibility rule.

IMDb says it publishes weighted vote averages rather than raw averages. It may use an alternate weighting calculation when it detects unusual voting activity, and it does not disclose the exact method. As IMDb puts it, “To ensure that our rating mechanism remains effective, we do not disclose the exact method used to generate the rating.” IMDb Help: Weighted Average Ratings.

Why these examples do not make a ranked 40
The cited material provides a few examples, not a complete, current bottom-40 dataset from one platform. It does not establish consistent vote-count thresholds, title-format rules, or a score-check date for a complete list. A separate search result identifies a CBR page titled “The Lowest Rated Anime, Ranked” as updated January 30, 2024, but the page body was not available to verify its entries or order. A title and update date alone cannot substantiate a current 40-place ranking.
Rank #2
Format rules matter as well: a list might include or exclude shorts, OVAs, and specials, changing which titles are eligible. Without a stated platform, cutoff, minimum vote count, format policy, and date checked, readers cannot reproduce the ranking or tell whether a very low score reflects broad dislike or a small pool of votes.

How to read a low score
- Keep the platform attached to the number. A MyAnimeList score and an IMDb score are separate results, not interchangeable measurements.
- Check eligibility and sample context. A credible ranking should state its minimum vote count and whether it includes films, TV series, OVAs, shorts, and specials.
- Treat rank as time-sensitive. Scores and ordering can change; a useful list gives the date the scores were checked.
- Read “worst” as a rating-list label. A low audience score describes a platform’s rating result, not an objective verdict on every viewer’s experience.
