That connection makes the casting headline unusually apt: Ali Hazelwood’s romance novel began as a Rey-and-Kylo-Ren-inspired story. But the film adapts Hazelwood’s published novel, not Star Wars, and director Claire Scanlon says Bateman was chosen for his fit for the role—not as a gimmick.
What is The Love Hypothesis film?
It is a film adaptation of Ali Hazelwood’s romance novel, directed by Claire Scanlon and written by Sarah Rothschild. Lili Reinhart stars as Olive Smith, a Ph.D. candidate pursuing an academic career; Bateman plays professor Adam Carlsen. Rachel Marsh plays Olive’s best friend Ahn, and Nicholas Duvernay plays Jeremy, Olive’s crush.
In Amazon’s official synopsis, Olive kisses Adam to convince Ahn that she has moved on from Jeremy. The kiss leads to a fake relationship, and the romantic tension turns on whether the arrangement remains an act. TheWrap reports that Olive’s research concerns pancreatic cancer at Stanford.
Amazon says the film began streaming exclusively on Prime Video globally on September 23, 2026. Availability and Prime membership terms can vary by region; Amazon directs viewers to their local site for regional details. Check Amazon’s film page.

How does the story connect to Star Wars?
Hazelwood’s 2021 debut novel grew out of a modern-university Rey/Kylo Ren fan-fiction premise, according to Publishers Weekly. TheWrap reports that the online story was titled Head Over Feet and appeared in 2018; it was removed from its original site when the novel was published.
The published novel is a distinct contemporary romance, and the movie adapts that novel. It is not a licensed Star Wars story or a film adaptation of the fan fiction. The connection that makes the casting striking is personal: Bateman, playing Adam, is married to Ridley, who played Rey. The original story drew inspiration from Rey and Kylo Ren, the character played by Adam Driver.

Was Bateman cast because he is married to Daisy Ridley?
According to Scanlon and producer Elizabeth Cantillon, no. In TheWrap’s interview, Scanlon said, “You can’t cast a lead role as a gimmick.” She described Bateman as an actor who could embody Adam and bring the comedy skills the part needed. Publishers Weekly also reports that Hazelwood’s descriptions of the characters helped guide casting.
So the real-life relationship sharpens the resemblance between the book’s origin and the film’s cast, but the director’s stated rationale was Bateman’s suitability for the role. The available interview accounts do not establish that Ridley was involved in the film.

How does the film acknowledge its fan-fiction roots?
Scanlon has described deliberate musical and visual touches that evoke the source inspiration without turning the movie into a Star Wars story. She told TheWrap that a Star Wars-like score moment around an Adam hallway scene was intentional. In an interview with TV Insider/Swooon, she said John Williams homages appear during two Adam scenes and discussed Gracie Abrams’s “Mess It Up” as an Easter egg. The cues offer a nod for viewers who know the book’s history; they do not change the film’s status as a romance adaptation.

One documented difference is the ending. Scanlon told Publishers Weekly that the film ends differently from the book and that Hazelwood approved the change. She explained the choice this way: “The movie starts with Olive and the movie ends with Olive.” Her comment frames the revised ending around Olive’s perspective.

The interviews also identify Olive and Ahn’s friendship as an important part of the adaptation. That emphasis fits the premise: Olive’s first kiss with Adam is staged to reassure Ahn, even as the fake relationship develops into a romance. The sources establish these adaptation choices, but do not support a general verdict about whether the film or novel is better.
