The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is a 134-minute anime feature that returns to Middle-earth through a story about Helm Hammerhand, his daughter Héra, and a war with Wulf. Its best reason to watch is the chance to see Rohan rendered in a strikingly different visual language; its main limitation is that a brief history from Tolkien’s appendices has to carry the weight of a feature-length, character-led war story. Whether that expansion feels worthwhile depends on how much you value the film’s anime imagery and Rohan backstory over a narrative with the scale and momentum of the live-action trilogy.

What is The War of the Rohirrim about?

Set 183 years before the original film trilogy, the story follows Rohan’s King Helm Hammerhand and his household as conflict with Wulf threatens the kingdom. Héra, Helm’s daughter, is central to the film’s account of that crisis. The defense of the Hornburg—later known as Helm’s Deep—connects this earlier war to a place familiar from Peter Jackson’s films. Rotten Tomatoes’ synopsis gives the 183-year setting gap; the film’s plot summary also identifies Helm, Héra, Wulf, and the Hornburg.

This is not a direct adaptation of a full Tolkien novel. Associated Press critic Jake Coyle describes its source basis as the Rohan history in a The Lord of the Rings appendix. The film turns that limited account into a longer dramatic story, so viewers should expect an expansion rather than a scene-by-scene rendering of a substantial standalone book. Coyle’s AP review discusses both the appendix connection and the question of how much story the film builds from it.

Does the anime style work?

The change from live action to anime is the film’s clearest distinction from the familiar Middle-earth movies. Director Kenji Kamiyama’s approach gives the Rohan war a different visual texture, rather than trying to reproduce the look of Jackson’s trilogy. Coyle praises the imagery as “some dazzling vintage anime visuals,” while noting that it feels a world apart from those earlier films. That distance can be an advantage if you want a fresh interpretation of Middle-earth; it may be less appealing if visual continuity with the live-action films is what you value most.

The film was presented by New Line Cinema as an original anime feature, with Warner Bros. Animation and Sola Entertainment as production collaborators. Its official site credits the screenplay to Jeffrey Addiss, Will Matthews, Phoebe Gittins, and Arty Papageorgiou, and the story to Addiss and Matthews with Philippa Boyens. The site also says the characters were created by J.R.R. Tolkien. The official film site lists these credits.

How does it compare with the other Middle-earth films?

The War of the Rohirrim is a standalone historical tale, not another chapter following the Fellowship. Its connection to the trilogy comes through Rohan, Helm’s Deep, and the earlier history of the people who defend the Hornburg. The comparison is therefore less about matching the trilogy’s plot and more about whether a different medium and a narrower historical focus make this corner of Middle-earth compelling.

  • For anime viewers: The hand-drawn-inspired visual approach and battle imagery offer a distinct reason to watch, even if you do not expect the film to look like the live-action trilogy.
  • For Tolkien readers: The appendix basis gives the story a place in Tolkien’s Rohan history, but the film’s feature-length narrative necessarily develops material beyond the brief source record.
  • For trilogy-first fans: The Hornburg connection adds context to a familiar setting, though the story does not have the Fellowship’s central journey or ensemble structure.

Is the expanded story compelling?

The central conflict gives the film a clear dramatic spine: Wulf’s conflict with Helm sets the war in motion, while Héra’s role and the defense of the Hornburg bring the family story into the larger struggle. The film’s challenge is one of scale. Coyle finds it comparatively small and questions the rationale for turning this particular piece of franchise history into a feature. Other reviews displayed on Rotten Tomatoes praise the animation and its appeal to Middle-earth fans, while also including criticism that the storytelling feels rushed. Those reactions point to a real dividing line: the film may satisfy viewers drawn to Rohan and the anime visuals more readily than viewers looking for a fully developed epic on the scale of the trilogy. AP’s review and the Rotten Tomatoes film page reflect those different critical responses.

Is it worth watching for a Lord of the Rings fan?

It is most likely to appeal if you are curious about Rohan’s past, comfortable with animation as a way into Tolkien’s world, or interested in seeing the Hornburg’s history explored. It is a less certain choice if you want the scale, narrative momentum, or live-action continuity of the trilogy. Treat it as a separate Middle-earth story with a meaningful connection to the films, rather than as a replacement for them or a new chapter in the Fellowship’s saga.
