The charge that it is “soulless” is an argument about the result—not a fact about its creators’ intentions: critics have found the story slight, its characters familiar, and its scale modest beside the films it recalls. Reception is mixed, however, and some viewers find the anime approach and callbacks worthwhile.
What is The War of the Rohirrim about?
Warner Bros. describes the film as an original anime feature set 183 years before the events of the original film trilogy. It follows the House of Helm Hammerhand after Wulf seeks revenge for his father’s death. Helm and his people make a last stand at the Hornburg, the fortress later known as Helm’s Deep. The film’s official site lists Kenji Kamiyama as director and Philippa Boyens as producer; its screenplay is by Jeffrey Addiss, Will Matthews, Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou, with a story by Addiss, Matthews and Boyens based on characters created by J.R.R. The connection to the larger saga is real, but it is a deep cut rather than a continuation of the trilogy’s central plot. The Associated Press review identifies the source material as Rohan history in an appendix to The Lord of the Rings. That gives the filmmakers room to dramatize an episode only briefly sketched in the source, while also leaving less developed narrative material to build upon than a full novel provides. Why do critics call the return unnecessary or “soulless”?
The strongest version of the criticism is not that the film has no connection to Tolkien, or that its makers lacked sincerity. It is that a familiar setting and franchise links do not, by themselves, make a new story feel necessary. AP critic Jake Coyle called the storytelling earnest but said the film “never supplies much of an answer as to why, exactly, it exists.” He also judged its scale comparatively minor and TV-sized beside the Jackson trilogy, likening its feel to a 1990s direct-to-video release rather than a successor to those films. That judgment points to a gap between subject and execution. Helm’s last stand and the history of Helm’s Deep promise a consequential chapter of Rohan’s past. But when the source is a compressed appendix account, the adaptation must make its people and conflicts compelling on their own. Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus praises the spectacle while criticizing clichéd characters and uneven animation, calling the result closer to the middle of the road than to the distinctive standard associated with Middle-earth. “Soulless” is therefore most useful as a description of how the extension can feel to a skeptical viewer: more like another use of recognizable franchise elements than an essential new chapter. It should not be treated as proof of a cash-grab motive or as a claim about what the filmmakers intended; the available criticism does not establish either.

What works—and why reception is mixed
The film is not without its defenders. Coyle acknowledged its dazzling vintage anime visuals and the apparent sincerity with which it approaches Tolkien’s world. Rotten Tomatoes’ audience summary is more favorable than its critics consensus, describing an engaging animated prequel that ultimately satisfies despite visual unevenness. Some viewers may value exactly what others find derivative: the return to Rohan, the links to Helm’s Deep and the trilogy’s visual language, and a different animation style for a familiar world. Metacritic listed a 54 Metascore from 32 critic reviews when accessed in 2026, placing the reception in its “Mixed or Average” category. The page includes both praise for the animation and connections to the Jackson films and criticism that the adventure feels inconsequential or formulaic. Is it worth watching?
It depends on what you want from a Middle-earth story. If you are primarily looking for the narrative depth, character development and large-scale sweep of the live-action trilogy, the complaints about a slight story and modest scale may be decisive. If you are curious about Rohan’s history, want an anime interpretation of the setting, or enjoy franchise callbacks, the spectacle and world connections may be enough to make it worthwhile. The available reviews do not support a single answer for every viewer.

Is The War of the Rohirrim canon, and how does it connect to Helm’s Deep?
The official description places the film 183 years before the original film trilogy and centers it on characters and events from Rohan’s past. It is presented as an anime prequel based on Tolkien-created characters, not as a live-action sequel. Its story follows Helm Hammerhand’s household and the conflict with Wulf, culminating in a stand at the Hornburg—the fortress later called Helm’s Deep.
