In Tolkien’s legendarium, a palantír is a seeing-stone that can show distant places and communicate with other stones. In The Rings of Power, the palantír belongs to the Númenor storyline, where it serves the drama of a kingdom facing political change and uncertainty. The series’ visions should not be treated as a universal guide to how every palantír works in Tolkien’s books.
What is a palantír?
Palantíri are not simply crystal balls. Tolkien’s stones have two related uses: they can reveal images of distant places, and they can connect with other palantíri. Tolkien Gateway’s summary of the lore points to The Two Towers and Unfinished Tales for these functions: Tolkien Gateway’s Palantír entry.
How do the stones work in Tolkien’s books?
They allow distant viewing and communication
A user can direct a stone’s sight toward things far away, while the stones can also answer one another. Gandalf’s account in “The Palantír,” a chapter of The Two Towers, describes Orthanc’s stone as able to show small images of distant things and remote days when it was used alone. He also says that the stones in Gondor were open to the view of Osgiliath.
Their power does not make them safe
Looking through a palantír involves more than passively receiving an image. Gandalf says Saruman kept extending his gaze until he looked toward Barad-dûr and was caught. The episode illustrates the danger of reaching toward a power or will capable of turning the stone’s use against its viewer; it is not merely a story about seeing an alarming picture.

“Each palantír replied to each, but all those in Gondor were ever open to the view of Osgiliath. Now it appears that, as the rock of Orthanc has withstood the storms of time, so there the palantír of that tower has remained. But alone it could do nothing but see small images of things far off and days remote. Very useful, no doubt, that was to Saruman; yet it seems that he was not content. Further and further abroad he gazed, until he cast his gaze upon Barad-dûr. Then he was caught!”
— Gandalf, as quoted in The Two Towers, “The Palantír”

The passage is quoted in Tolkien Gateway’s Palantír entry.
How did the palantíri reach Middle-earth?
The stones have a history linking Númenor with the realms established in Middle-earth after its fall. Tolkien Gateway’s lore summary says Elendil brought seven palantíri from Númenor and that they were distributed among the realms in exile. That background connects the stones’ story to Númenor, but it does not make the later histories of the individual stones interchangeable.

How does The Rings of Power use the palantír?
The series places a palantír in the Númenor plot, using it within the kingdom’s political and prophetic drama. Prime Video’s official Season 2 listing describes Elendil seeking hope amid Númenor’s changing circumstances: Prime Video’s Season 2 listing. That official description confirms the Númenor context, but it does not set out a general operating rule for the stones or establish that every vision shown in the adaptation works the same way.
It is useful to keep the two frames distinct: Tolkien’s book lore establishes distant viewing, communication and the danger represented by Saruman’s encounter with Barad-dûr; the series uses the stone for its own Númenórean story. A particular vision in the show is part of that adaptation’s dramatic presentation, not automatically a rule for every palantír in the books.

Why aren’t Saruman’s and Denethor’s stones the same story?
The Orthanc-stone is associated with Saruman and his fatal contact with Barad-dûr. The Anor-stone is associated with Denethor and has a different user and history. Their stories help show why “the palantír” is not one single object with one uniform narrative: each stone’s place in the legendarium depends on who uses it and what happens around that use.
