The Long Walk is worth watching if you can handle graphic violence and want a bleak survival story driven by the fragile bond between its young competitors. Its central ordeal is deliberately repetitive, and that can make the film feel like a slog; the performances and growing friendship give the march emotional purpose, but they do not make it an easy watch.
What is The Long Walk about?
Francis Lawrence’s 2025 adaptation of Stephen King’s novel follows teenage boys forced into a lethal walking contest. In the story, 100 boys are selected by lottery, and only one can win, according to the Los Angeles Times. The film’s official synopsis presents it as an intense, chilling thriller based on King’s first-written novel.
Lawrence directed the film, with a screenplay by JT Mollner. Stephen King’s official film page lists its theatrical release date as September 12, 2025.
Is the film worth watching?
It depends on whether the relationships can carry you through a story built around endurance rather than changing locations or a succession of elaborate plot turns. The boys keep walking under the contest’s lethal rules; the pressure comes from fatigue, fear and what happens when someone can no longer continue. The methodical setup is inherently hard to dramatize, as RogerEbert.com notes, but the performances help maintain momentum. The Guardian, meanwhile, identifies the growing friendship among the walkers as the film’s emotional center.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That bond gives the repetition a reason to matter: each conversation and act of solidarity takes place under conditions that make trust feel precarious. Yet the film does not escape the limits of its premise. If you need a thriller to keep changing its shape, the long stretches of walking may test your patience. If you are willing to sit with a grim, sustained ordeal, the characters’ connection can make it compelling.
How bleak and violent is it?
Very. Screen International describes the film as unrelentingly bleak and brutal; the Guardian also places it among the grimmest mainstream films, and RogerEbert.com emphasizes the extreme brutality of the deaths. Violence is not incidental to the contest: the threat of what happens when a walker fails is part of the film’s constant emotional pressure.

If graphic onscreen violence is something you avoid, this is a strong reason to skip the film. Its bleakness is equally central to the experience, so it is not a good fit if you are looking for a lighter dystopian adventure.

One concrete difference is the minimum pace. Screen International reports that the film sets it at three miles per hour, compared with four miles per hour in the book. That is a difference in the fictional contest’s rules, not a real-world statistic.

The adaptation also changes the novel’s ending. Screen’s reviewer argues that the change reduces some of the book’s ambiguity while retaining a strong emotional impact. That is an interpretation rather than a neutral measure of which version is better: readers who value the novel’s uncertainty may feel the loss, while the film’s approach still aims to land emotionally.
