The Long Walk is a bleak, gripping Stephen King adaptation, powered by Cooper Hoffman and David Jonsson’s performances and the fragile friendship their characters form during a lethal contest. Whether it is one of the best King movies ever is a matter of taste; the evidence supports the narrower claim that it is one of the strongest in years. In his four-star review for The Irish Times, Donald Clarke makes that case for the film’s ensemble and its ability to make a sustained walk into compelling drama.
What is The Long Walk about?
Directed by Francis Lawrence and written by JT Mollner, the 2025 film adapts Stephen King’s novel. It follows 50 teenage boys in a grueling walking contest overseen by the Major. The prize is wealth and a wish; only one contestant will survive. Raymond Garraty, played by Cooper Hoffman, meets Peter McVries, played by David Jonsson, and the two find camaraderie under the contest’s mounting pressure. King’s official filmography lists the release date as September 12, 2025, and identifies Lionsgate as distributor. Apple TV lists a 108-minute runtime on its US-facing catalog page.
Clarke describes the setting as a fascist, economically depressed society. In his account of the contest’s rules, walkers who fail to keep the pace receive warnings before soldiers execute them on a third strike. That combination of public spectacle, state violence and individual endurance gives the story its dystopian force.
Why does the walking contest work as a film?
A contest built around walking risks becoming visually and dramatically repetitive. The film’s answer, as Clarke sees it, is its cast: distinct personalities and shifting relationships make the long stretch of movement feel like a human drama rather than a single sustained stunt. He writes, “The competing cast bust every tendon in creating gripping ambulatory drama.”

Hoffman and Jonsson provide the emotional center as Garraty and McVries. Their camaraderie gives the contest a personal stake, while the wider ensemble supplies contrast and tension. Clarke praises the cast’s ability to keep the drama alive and notes that King’s approach to characterization survives in the film: “The film retains the novelist’s penchant for sketching a wide array of characters with a few defining traits.”
Is The Long Walk faithful to the book?
The film is based on King’s 1979 novel, originally published under the pseudonym Richard Bachman. Clarke says Mollner’s screenplay takes liberties, particularly at the close, while retaining the novel’s characterization approach. His review judges the film’s impact to be strong despite those changes.

That is enough to say the adaptation is not a scene-for-scene transfer, but it does not establish precisely what changes at the ending or how the film resolves the book’s ambiguities. Readers curious about those choices should approach the novel as a companion to the film rather than assume the two versions match.
Is it one of the best Stephen King movies ever?
It may be for some viewers, but “one of the best ever” is an all-time ranking, not a fact that the available evidence can settle. Clarke’s four-star review for The Irish Times, published September 10, 2025, calls it “the best Stephen King film in years.” That is a named critic’s judgment, and his praise focuses on the ensemble and the way the movie sustains its central premise.

Rotten Tomatoes’ scores also indicated a positive reception at the time checked: on October 4, 2026, it listed an 88% Tomatometer from 297 reviews and an 85% Popcornmeter from more than 2,500 verified ratings. Those figures are a dated snapshot, not a permanent measure or proof of an all-time rank. Its consensus praises Hoffman and Jonsson’s performances and describes the film as riveting.
Is The Long Walk scary, and who should watch it?
Rotten Tomatoes classifies the film as mystery/thriller and horror. Apple TV’s US-facing listing gives an R rating for strong bloody violence, grisly images, suicide, pervasive language and sexual references. These labels and content categories are platform- and territory-specific, but they signal that this is a harsh, violent watch—not a gentle suspense film. Its horror comes in large part from the lethal rules and the pressure they place on the contestants.
