The story most closely matching The Lion: King of the Forest Story is a fable about a lion who asks three animals to judge his breath. The sheep answers honestly and is killed; the goat flatters the lion and is killed too; the horse says it cannot smell because it is unwell, and is allowed to go home. The title is not a reliable identifier by itself: other unrelated fables also feature a lion called the king of the forest.
What happens in the breath-and-advisers story?
In the text indexed under The Lion: King of the Forest Story, Queen Lioness tells King Lion that his breath smells unpleasant. The king then asks animals to assess it, turning what sounds like a simple question into a dangerous test.
- The sheep answers honestly. It says the lion’s breath is unpleasant, and the lion kills it.
- The goat praises the lion. Afraid to contradict him, it says his breath smells good. The lion kills the goat as well.
- The horse avoids giving an opinion. Apparently unwell, it says it cannot smell and therefore cannot answer. The lion lets it go home and rest.
The same central episode appears in a lesson-plan text titled The King of the forest and his three Advisers. That version’s educational use does not establish who first wrote the story or what its original audience was. The indexed story text and the lesson-plan version are the available matches.
What does the title mean, and who wrote the story?
“King of the forest” is a familiar description of a lion, not a unique story title. The exact-title search result points to the breath-and-advisers episode, but the available sources do not verify its original author, first publication date, or an authoritative edition. The indexed text identifies an uploader rather than a confirmed author. It is safest to describe this as the story associated with that title, not to assign it a settled origin or canonical version. The indexed text and the related lesson-plan text support the plot match, but not a fuller publication history.

How is it different from other lion fables?
Several stories use a lion as a powerful or tyrannical figure, but their plots are distinct. Identify the story by the episode and the animal’s role, rather than by the phrase “king of the forest” alone.
| Story | Identifying episode | How it differs |
|---|---|---|
| Breath-and-advisers story | The lion asks a sheep, a goat, and a horse about his breath. | The conflict is about how animals respond to a dangerous question. Indexed story |
| Rabbit-and-well story | A rabbit tricks a tyrannical lion into attacking its reflection in a well. | The rabbit’s deception, not advice about the lion’s breath, drives the plot. Rabbit-and-well version |
| The Lion and the Rat | A rat later frees a lion caught in a net. | The rat’s help after the lion is trapped distinguishes this fable. Lion-and-rat version |
The University of Pittsburgh folklore reference lists The Lion in the Water among fables of type 92, in connection with the rabbit-and-reflection story family. That reference does not establish the origin or classification of the breath-and-advisers tale. University of Pittsburgh folklore reference.

What lesson does the story teach?
The plot can invite readers to think about the risk of speaking honestly to someone with power, the danger of flattery, and the horse’s evasive answer. Those are reasonable readings of the events, not a verified statement of the fable’s intended moral. The available sources do not establish a single canonical lesson, cultural origin, or authoritative wording for the story.

If you are searching for a reading copy, look for the sheep, goat, and horse episode—or the alternate title The King of the Forest and His Three Advisers—rather than relying on “King of the Forest” alone. A book or collection listing should show a contents page or preview confirming this particular story; the available sources do not verify a specific printed edition containing it.
