Becki Newton called The Lincoln Lawyer Season 3’s final reveal “a great cliffhanger” and said she was “completely shocked and completely thrilled.” The shock: police stop Mickey Haller as he drives away in his Lincoln, open the trunk, and find his former client Sam Scales dead inside. Newton’s take adds a character-level question to the crime: Lorna, newly a lawyer, would assume Mickey was innocent.
What happens at the end of Season 3?
After telling his team he plans to take a vacation, Mickey leaves in his Lincoln. Police pull him over, notice the car’s missing license plate and fluid that looks like blood, then search the trunk. They find Sam Scales, a former client of Mickey’s, shot dead. Netflix’s finale explainer identifies the discovery as the season’s closing shock.

The reveal turns the show’s central legal setup around: Mickey is no longer only the lawyer defending other people. He is now facing a murder accusation himself.
What did Becki Newton say about the cliffhanger?
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, republished by AOL, Newton—who plays Lorna Crane—said: “It’s a great cliffhanger and incredible to see Mickey as the person who needs to be defended. Again, I was completely shocked and completely thrilled.” She also said that conversations around the show treated Lorna as assuming Mickey was innocent, adding, “I can’t wait to see how the office responds.” The interview is available at AOL.

- A lawyer defending a wealthy man begins to believe his client is guilty of more than just one crime.
Newton’s reaction is not just about the surprise of the body in the trunk. The reveal creates a new role for the legal team—and puts Lorna’s trust in Mickey into immediate tension with the evidence police have found.
Why does Lorna’s new career matter?
By the finale, Lorna has passed the bar and is working as a lawyer. Netflix’s recap places her with Mickey’s team after the trial, while Newton described Lorna as open to taking cases that would give her practical experience. Rather than settling on a specialty, Lorna is still learning by doing; Newton noted that Lorna recognizes divorce law can be lucrative, but that was her reading of the character, not a forecast of where the story must go.

That professional change gives the ending another dimension. Lorna is no longer only part of Mickey’s office support system: she is becoming a lawyer who may have to help defend him.

Netflix confirms that Season 4 follows Mickey as he tries to prove his innocence in Sam Scales’s murder. The official synopsis puts the reversal plainly: “this time Mickey is the client.” Becki Newton returns as Lorna. Season 4 is based on Michael Connelly’s novel The Law of Innocence; the book is the adaptation’s source material, not required preparation for understanding the television finale. Details appear in Netflix Tudum’s Season 4 announcement and the Netflix Media Center series page.
