James De Marco killed Glory Days. Julian La Cosse looked like the obvious suspect after visiting Gloria Dayton, arguing with her, and grabbing her by the neck—but he left her alive. De Marco arrived later and set fire to her home. The finale resolves Gloria’s murder, then opens a separate mystery when Mickey finds Sam Scales dead in his car’s trunk.
Why did Julian look guilty?
Julian La Cosse worked as an IT operator who verified the identities of people booking escorts. He presented the work as a way to help protect sex workers, while also taking a cut of their earnings. When Gloria fell behind on a payment, Julian went to see her.
The visit turned into an argument. Julian grabbed Gloria by the neck to push her away, giving investigators—and viewers—a concrete reason to suspect him. But that assault was not the cause of her death: Netflix’s Season 3 ending explainer says Julian left Gloria alive.
Who actually killed Glory Days?
DEA agent James De Marco murdered Gloria. He had sent private investigator Neil Bishop to locate her address, then went to her home after Julian had left and set a fire. The finale’s reveal identifies De Marco as the killer, not Julian.

That changes the meaning of Mickey’s defense. Julian is not merely a client Mickey manages to free; he is innocent of Gloria’s murder. Mickey has been trying to learn who killed a friend and former client while defending someone who did not commit the crime.
What does the ending mean for Mickey?
Showrunner and executive producer Ted Humphrey described Mickey’s predicament as a “double whammy” of responsibility: “It’s Mickey trying to get to the bottom of who killed somebody he cared about, and at the same time, feeling like he’s really on the line representing a truly innocent client.” The personal stakes make the case about more than winning in court.

The season’s title phrase, “gods of guilt,” also connects the courtroom to Mickey’s personal circle. Showrunner and executive producer Dailyn Rodriguez said, “The ‘gods of guilt’ in our world are usually what Mickey calls the jury.” She also distinguished the jury from the people in Mickey’s life who keep him accountable. These are the creators’ interpretations of the phrase, not a legal doctrine within the story.
Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, who plays Mickey, said guilt helps bring Mickey’s life into balance and motivates him to do what is right. That idea carries into the team’s closing toast: their celebration is not only about a verdict, but also about personal accountability.

What happens in the final scene?
After Julian is vindicated, Mickey drives away in his powder-blue Lincoln Continental. An officer stops him because the car has no license plate and notices what appears to be blood on the rear bumper. In the trunk is Sam Scales, a con man who has been shot dead.
This is a new cliffhanger, separate from Gloria’s resolved murder. Netflix’s ending explainer does not identify who put Sam’s body in the car or explain why. The final discovery should not be read as reopening the question of who killed Glory Days.

How Season 3 connects to the book
Netflix says the 10-episode third season is based on Michael Connelly’s novel The Gods of Guilt, and the finale uses the book’s title. Connelly’s official book page also identifies the novel as the basis for the season; the publisher’s listing for The Gods of Guilt provides an optional companion read. The novel and the television adaptation are related, but that does not mean their details or endings are identical.
