Moovalur Ramamirtham Ammaiyar, born in 1883 according to M. Sivakami’s 2014 account in the South Indian History Congress proceedings, was a Tamil woman who left the life her family had prepared for her, moved into Congress politics and later the Self-Respect Movement, and used public speech, marriage reform and fiction to challenge the devadasi system. She is best understood as one active participant in a long, collective campaign that ended with the 1947 prohibition of the practice in the Madras Presidency, not as its sole author.
Who she was, and what the sources establish
Ramamirtham is known in Tamil public life mainly through a small body of sources: a short scholarly biographical article, a critical reading of her autobiographical novel, and a 2024 English biography that was translated from a Tamil original. Taken together, they describe a reformer whose critique covered caste hierarchy, patriarchy and Brahminical social authority, and whose work moved between party politics, reform gatherings and writing. The label “anti-caste” in the title is the framing used by the book’s publisher and by later commentators. The sources describe her critique of caste in those terms, but none of them records her describing herself that way, so this article uses the label as a description of her positions rather than her own self-description.
Early life and marriage, as reported
M. Sivakami’s 2014 article states that Ramamirtham was raised in a devadasi family at Moovalur and was initiated into the system while still young. It also reports her marriage to Suyambu Pillai, a musician, and the ostracism that followed. These are intimate details, and they come from a single secondary account. The article’s own text is difficult to read in places, so the marriage and its consequences should be taken as claims reported by that source rather than as settled biographical fact.
What the sources agree on is that the marriage marked a break from the path prescribed for her. Sivakami presents this as the start of her move toward public life, and the English biography builds its narrative around that turn.

Political organising: Congress and the Self-Respect Movement
The Congress years
Ramamirtham first worked within Congress politics, where she pressed for the abolition of the devadasi custom. The publisher’s description of the English biography calls her a persistent campaigner against the system during this period. Her reasons for leaving Congress are not clear. The 2014 article notes that her own writings do not explain the departure, so any account that gives a single cause should be treated with caution.
The Self-Respect Movement
Her later work took place within the Self-Respect Movement, which opposed Brahminical ritual authority and promoted rational, non-caste forms of social life. Scholars link her to its ideas about caste, gender and reform. Her activities included support for self-respect marriages, which were conducted without Brahmin priests and without the religious rites the movement criticised. The 2024 review by Kavitha Muralidharan in Scroll.in also notes her involvement in anti-Hindi activism, which indicates that her public work extended beyond the devadasi question.

Campaigning against the devadasi system
Public speech and reform gatherings
Sivakami describes Ramamirtham as campaigning for abolition, organising reform gatherings and speaking publicly about the practice. The same article reports that she faced threats and violence for this work. These accounts are paraphrased from the secondary source; the specific events are not independently documented in the material available for this article.
Support for Muthulakshmi Reddy and local associations
Sivakami also places Ramamirtham in a network of local associations and describes her support for Muthulakshmi Reddy, the physician and legislator who was among the most prominent campaigners for abolition. Ramamirtham’s role here was that of an ally in a wider movement, not a separate leader of it.

Tācikaḷ Mōcavaḷai, or Web of Deceit
Her 1936 autobiographical novel, Tācikaḷ Mōcavaḷai, is also rendered as Dasigalin Mosavalai and translated into English as Web of Deceit. It draws on her firsthand experience and on Self-Respect Movement ideas to discuss caste, patriarchy, Brahminism and women’s reform.
What the novel does
The novel is an argument as much as a memoir. It presents the devadasi system as a structure of exploitation maintained by religious, economic and social authority, and it asks readers to see women in the system as people who had been denied choice. Its critique of Brahminical power and of the marriage practices that sustained the system connects it directly to the reform programme she supported in politics.

How to read it
Lee Dongwon’s 2021 article in the Journal of Humanities of Seoul National University (volume 78, issue 2, pages 83–121) treats the novel as a text shaped by reform discourse rather than as a transparent record of every devadasi’s life. Lee shows how the novel positions devadasis within the reform debates of its time. Readers should therefore treat it as a source for Ramamirtham’s views and for the discourse she joined, not as a neutral account of the practice across regions or periods.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Abolition in 1947: a shared outcome
The practice was made illegal in 1947 through legislation in the Madras Presidency. Scholarship, including Lee’s article, places Ramamirtham’s writing and activism within the broader movement that produced that outcome. That movement involved legislators, physicians, reformers, women’s organisations and many devadasi women themselves. Ramamirtham’s contribution was real, but it was one part of a sustained campaign, and no source supports crediting her alone with abolition.

The devadasi system was also not uniform. Its practices, communities and economic arrangements varied by region and period, and the sources describe the coercive and exploitative elements of the system as they were understood by reformers of the time. They should not be read as describing the experience of every dancer, temple or community.
