Bellatrix was born into the Black family and married Rodolphus Lestrange; Rabastan is Rodolphus’s brother. Leta Lestrange belongs to an earlier branch, but the available official sources do not establish how she is related to Bellatrix or Rodolphus. Keeping birth-family ties separate from marriages makes the tree clear.
Lestrange family tree at a glance
The clearest documented links come from the Black family tapestry scene in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and official Wizarding World family features. Solid lines below represent stated relationships; Leta’s branch is kept separate because its exact connection to the later Lestranges is not established.
- Black family and marriages: Bellatrix Black married Rodolphus Lestrange. Rodolphus’s brother is Rabastan Lestrange. Bellatrix’s sisters are Andromeda and Narcissa Black.
- Andromeda’s marriage: Andromeda married Ted Tonks.
- Narcissa’s marriage: Narcissa married Lucius Malfoy; their son is Draco Malfoy.
- Earlier Lestrange branch: Leta Lestrange’s father is identified by Wizarding World as Corvus Lestrange. The precise relationship between Leta’s branch and Rodolphus’s branch is not stated.
Is Bellatrix a Black or a Lestrange?
Both names describe different parts of her family history. Bellatrix was born Bellatrix Black, and she became Bellatrix Lestrange through marriage to Rodolphus. Sirius Black is her cousin, according to the official Black family reference. Bellatrix is also Draco Malfoy’s aunt, as stated in her official fact file.
How are Bellatrix and Rodolphus related?
They are husband and wife. In the tapestry scene in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Sirius tells Harry that Bellatrix Black is connected to Rodolphus Lestrange by a double line, the tapestry’s marriage mark. The novel’s scene is the direct textual source for their relationship.

Is Rabastan Lestrange Rodolphus’s brother?
Yes. In the same conversation about the tapestry, Sirius identifies Rabastan as Rodolphus’s brother. Rabastan is therefore Bellatrix’s brother-in-law, not her brother by birth.
Are Bellatrix, Andromeda and Narcissa sisters?
Yes. Bellatrix is the eldest of the three Black sisters. Their marriage choices lead into separate family branches: Andromeda married Ted Tonks, while Narcissa married Lucius Malfoy. The official Wizarding World account describes Bellatrix’s marriage to Rodolphus as motivated by the family’s commitment to blood purity, rather than love.
How is Bellatrix related to Sirius Black?
Bellatrix and Sirius are cousins. That connection comes through Bellatrix’s birth family, the Blacks; it is distinct from her marriage into the Lestrange family. The official Black family feature also describes how members who opposed the family’s blood-purity ideals could be removed from its tree, which helps explain why the tapestry matters in the story.
How is Leta Lestrange related to Bellatrix?
The exact relationship is not established by the official sources cited here. Wizarding World identifies Leta as an earlier Lestrange and names Corvus Lestrange as her father, but does not connect her by a specified generation or direct line to Rodolphus or Bellatrix. A shared surname and an earlier place in the family’s history are not enough to claim that Leta was Rodolphus’s ancestor or Bellatrix’s relative in a particular degree.
