Leighton Meester became widely recognizable through Blair Waldorf, the sharp, status-conscious student she played on The CW’s Gossip Girl. But the role was a breakthrough in a career already underway: she began in modeling, made her television debut in 1999, and built experience in recurring TV roles before joining the series in 2007. Since Gossip Girl ended in 2012, her work has continued across film, music, Broadway and television.
How did Leighton Meester become famous?
Meester’s rise was gradual. Early modeling and screen work gave way to recurring television roles, then to Blair Waldorf, the character that became her defining public role. Apple TV describes Blair as Meester’s breakthrough role; Gossip Girl ran from 2007 to 2012, according to Rotten Tomatoes’ biography of the actor.

The fame associated with that role is a clear career milestone, not a measurable claim about earnings, awards or industry standing. The available biographies and credits establish her work and chronology, but do not provide audience totals or another metric that would quantify “star” status.
What was Leighton Meester in before Gossip Girl?
Meester began modeling before moving into screen acting. Apple TV’s biography dates her television debut to 1999, in an episode of Law & Order, and her film debut to 2003’s Hangman’s Curse. Before Gossip Girl, Apple TV also lists recurring roles in Entourage and Veronica Mars.

These credits show a career developing through different kinds of work rather than beginning with one instant breakthrough. The early roles are useful context for her path to Blair, even though they did not make her as widely recognizable.
Why did Blair Waldorf become her defining role?
Meester joined Gossip Girl in 2007 as Blair Waldorf. The series gave her a sustained role in a prominent ensemble, and its six-year run made Blair the part most closely associated with her career. Apple TV identifies the role as her breakthrough; Rotten Tomatoes dates the show’s run from 2007 through 2012.
Her work during the series’ run also began to extend beyond television. Film credits from that period and afterward include Date Night, Country Strong, The Roommate and Monte Carlo. These are selected examples, not a ranking of her films or a claim about their commercial performance.
What has Leighton Meester done since Gossip Girl?
After the series concluded, Meester continued working in multiple formats. Her later credits include films such as Life Partners and The Judge, and more recent titles including The Weekend Away, My Father’s Dragon, River Wild and EXmas, as listed in Apple and Rotten Tomatoes profiles. Her television work has included Single Parents.

Music and Broadway
Music has been another strand of Meester’s work. Apple lists her album Heartstrings (2014) and songs associated with film releases, including “Give In to Me,” “Words I Couldn’t Say” and “A Little Bit Stronger” from Country Strong. Apple TV also notes “Somebody to Love,” featuring Robin Thicke, and Meester’s vocals on Cobra Starship’s “Good Girls Go Bad.” These credits establish music as part of her career without implying a particular sales, chart or label achievement.
In 2014, she made her Broadway debut in an adaptation of Of Mice and Men, according to Apple TV. That stage appearance extended her work beyond screen acting.
Television projects announced or active in 2025
Recent television announcements show continued activity. The CW describes Good Cop/Bad Cop as a procedural dramedy centered on Lou, played by Meester, and her brother Henry, who work as detectives. Apple TV Press confirmed Meester joined The Buccaneers for its second season, which debuted June 18, 2025; Apple announced a third season in October 2025. Those announcements establish the season and renewal news at those dates, not any production status beyond what Apple announced.

Meester’s career is best understood as a sequence: modeling and early screen credits, recurring television work, a defining role on Gossip Girl, and sustained work across other media. Blair Waldorf remains the clearest explanation for how she became famous, while her subsequent credits show that her professional life continued well beyond the series.
