In Mausala Parva, a pilgrimage gathering at Prabhasa turns into a drunken quarrel and mutual slaughter, with the text also invoking a curse by Brahmanas. The epic places these events thirty-six years after the Kurukshetra war.
What was Gandhari’s curse on Krishna?
After the Kurukshetra war, Gandhari confronts Krishna amid the devastation. She blames him for not preventing the slaughter and predicts that his own people will suffer a comparable fate. In the cited translation of the Mahabharata’s Stri Parva, she tells him, “Your family will die by fratricide.”
Krishna does not deny the prediction. He answers that no one else could bring about the Yadava heroes’ death and says, “The Yadavas shall therefore, die by the weapons of one another.” These are translated lines of dialogue in the epic, not testimony from a historical witness; wording can vary across translations. Read the Stri Parva passage in translation.
How did Krishna’s clan die in the Mahabharata?
The thirty-sixth year after the war
Mausala Parva connects the catastrophe to Gandhari’s earlier words: Krishna recognizes that the thirty-sixth year after the war has arrived and understands that the prediction is about to be fulfilled. This is the epic’s internal chronology, not an independently established historical date. See Mausala Parva, Section 2, in Ganguli’s translation.

The gathering at Prabhasa
The Vrishnis and Andhakas travel with their families to Prabhasa. Drinking takes place during the gathering, and a quarrel erupts between Yuyudhana, also known as Satyaki, and Kritavarma. Their dispute draws on accusations about conduct during the Kurukshetra war and escalates into violence.
From quarrel to mutual slaughter
In Kisari Mohan Ganguli’s translation, reeds taken up as weapons become iron bolts, and members of the opposing groups kill one another. The passage attributes the transformation and slaughter to the curse of the Brahmanas. It therefore presents a chain of events—gathering, drinking, argument, and escalating violence—alongside supernatural causation, rather than depicting Gandhari’s curse as the sole immediate cause. Why did the Yadavas kill one another?
The narrative gives the conflict a human trigger as well as a supernatural frame. The argument between Satyaki and Kritavarma reopens grievances from the war; drinking accompanies the gathering; and the quarrel spreads until the clan turns on itself. At the same time, Mausala Parva explicitly associates the iron reeds and the deaths with the Brahmanas’ curse, while its earlier section recalls Gandhari’s prediction. Those strands should be kept distinct: Gandhari foretells the manner of the clan’s end, and the later episode narrates how the destruction unfolds.
What happens to Krishna after the clan’s destruction?
In Ganguli’s account, Krishna withdraws after the Yadavas’ destruction and enters yoga. Jara, a hunter, mistakes Krishna for a deer and strikes him at the heel with an arrow. The narrative then describes Krishna’s ascent in devotional and cosmic terms. This is the Mahabharata’s account of Krishna’s departure, not an independently verified historical report. Read Mausala Parva, Section IV, in Ganguli’s translation.

How does the Bhagavata Purana version compare?
The Bhagavata Purana also recounts the extermination of the Yadava race in Eleventh Skandha, Chapter 30. The cited English translation is G. V. Tagare’s 1950 translation, and its page notes that the Bhagavata and Mahabharata accounts differ in detail. Keep the versions separate when comparing who or what is said to curse the Yadavas, how the conflict begins, how weapons and deaths are described, and how Krishna’s departure is narrated. The page’s preference for the Mahabharata on certain specifics is its editor’s assessment, not a neutral scholarly consensus. Read Bhagavata Purana, Eleventh Skandha, Chapter 30.
